AND HIS DESCENDANTS

George was baptised at St Peter's Church,
Hope on the 1st December, 1807.
He was a twin to John (1). They were the first born children to John and
Betty.
As a young man, George migrated to Stalybridge and by 1832 had set himself
up as a butcher.
He was living at 98 Rassbottom Street, sharing the premises with his Uncle
Ralph.
This information can be found in the " Manchester and Salford Trade
Directory 1832 ".
On the 13th January, 1835 George married Betty Buckley/Whitehead at
Manchester Cathedral.
On the marriage certificate Betty gives her surname as Buckley yet on the
birth certificate of their son Edward,
it is stated as Whitehead.

Marriage Certificate of
George and Betty
However this does seem to
be the same person and looks likely that Betty was born illegitimate but her
mother later
married her natural father. There is no evidence to prove otherwise.
George and Betty continued to live in Stalybridge. In 1841 they were still
living on Rassbottom Street but by 1851
they had moved to 6 Chapel Street and George was listed on the census as
being a pawnbroker,
although it seems likely that he also retained his butchers business.
In 1881 George was still
living at Chapel Street but no longer working, on census he is listed as a
property owner.

Death Certificates of Betty and George
Both George and Betty, with their children

Unfortunately, over the years, the grave has become very overgrown.
