Williams stems from very ancient times. It was first found in Breconshire and Monmouthshire on the English/Welsh border.

My earliest known Williams ancestor was John born c.1832 in Hereford.
His father was also John.
What we know of John is that for most of his working life he worked on the railways as a navigator and through this he travelled all over the country.

He was married twice, details of the first marriage are unknown but his second marriage was to Bridget Davidson Hazelden
at Ripley Parish Church Derbyshire on the 6th July, 1873.

Bridget Davidson Williams ( nee Hazelden )

Before his marriage to Bridget, John had lived in Middlesex and Sussex. After their marriage they lived in Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, Sussex and Surrey before finally settling in Uppermill, Saddleworth between 1881 and 1883.

My grandmother, Mary Williams, was born on the 28th October, 1877 at Uckfield in Sussex.

Birth Certificate of Mary Williams

She would have attended St Chad's school in Uppermill and then went on to work in the mill where she was a cardroom hand,
or slubber as they were sometimes known. This was one of the dirtiest and most unskilled jobs in textile manufacture and
involved cleaning the cotton.

Mary married Matthias Schofield at Saddleworth Church on the
6th October, 1900.
