First of all:
If you take a look around you will find that the Internet has quite a few web sites on countertenors. More and more people become interested in this phenomenon of Old Music, it seems. At present we are undergoing something like a renaissance of the countertenors' tradition and this takes place all over the world.
- And so here is the next site on the suubject.
In 1997 I was thinking to myself that I would like to try and create a web site. I have also been a fan of Jochen Kowalski, the Berlin Star-Alto, for a long time. So, what could have been more obvious as creating a FAN-PAGE dedicated to the star?
Kowalski was already on the stage when countertenors hadn't been mushrooming, yet as they seem to do now. And therefore, he contributed significantly to the renaissance of countertenors (on the strength of his extraordinary popularity above all). 'Kowalski,' - writes the author of the
(UN)OFFICIAL COUNTERTENOR HOMEPAGE - 'perhaps more than any other modern countertenor, has put the voice type on the map. Since his technique and stage presence are so good, since he has performed a good deal of 'non early' repertoire, and since he has graced the stages of several major opera houses, Kowalski has made the case for the
countertenor's being a 'normal' and acceptable voice.'. The Berliners adore Jochen Kowalski for his presence on stage and his charisma. I also only had to see Jochen Kowalski performing a few times until he became my 'favourite Alto'. What is most fascinating to me is the great honesty of his voice - if something like that exists? It is probably this naturalness of Kowalski's voice that causes even the most ornamented baroque air sung by Kowalski still sounding extremely down to earth. As you see, the phenomenon Kowalski is hardly to describe. Nevertheless, I have tried to do it with this web site, especially as the Internet has limited information up until now. There still is no official web site, for example.
Please, note that the FAN-PAGE is not claiming to be without fault. My sources contained some contradictions on which I simply had to decide which the most likely version would be.
Let's get started, then!
... or go back to the beginning!
