ARA SEVERA SEVERA: From North Venezuela east to French Guyana and Brazil, regions North West Mato Grosso, North Goias and North West Bahia. ARA SEVERA CASTANEIFRONS: Eest Panama; Columbia along Atrato and Caribbean coast and east of the Andes south to East Peru, North Bolivia, West Venezuela to North West Mato Grosso in Brazil.

Length: 46 cm (ARA SEVERA CASTANEIFRONS slightly larger).
Palmfruits, nuts and berries from the treetops.
Plumage general green. Forehead black (more brownish in castaneifrons). Naked white face striped with narrow lines of black feathers. Carpal edge red. Outer parts of the large flight feathers blue. Tailfeathers reddish brown, green at the base. "Socks" with a red border to the feet. Bill black. Legs grey. Iris brownish red.
