The world is a wasteland, the human population nearly wiped out, as the War of the Magi rages. Creatures of magick, known as Espers, fight against humans who were infused with the Espers' extracted magickal power. These people are known as the Mage Knights.

An emperor named Gestahl and his three generals - Leo, Kefka, and Celes - lead a power-hungry Empire that is quickly gaining control across the continents in this modern era, taking advantage of the new inventions that spring forth at breakneck speed. Their newest creations are fighting machines that are stronger than anything anyone has seen, merely known as Magitek Armor. While these weapons of incredible destructive power would be enough for the Empire to gain complete control of the world's cities, there are whispered rumors of things that are brewing within the ranks. It has been said that there is an Esper in the northern mining town of Narshe. An Esper! Think of the power that could be harnessed with a creature of pure magick...

In the midst of history dangerously looming over the edge of repeating itself, there is a girl rumored to be some kind of witch. She is a soldier of the Empire and it's said that she used some kind of fire to take out an entire group of the army's men...the interesting thing is that no one knows how she produced it. She leads the seige on Narshe in the expedition to obtain the Esper...and the story begins...
