Lily Evans Like Hermione, Lily was Muggle-born. However, she probably had to face even more ridicule than Hermione does because Lord Voldemort was gaining power and followers while she was in school, so the opinion that pure blood was the only good blood was more popular in her time, unfortunately. This didn't seem to bother her, though. She never had trouble finding friends in Gryffindor and was at the top of the class, becoming Head Girl in her seventh year, and she was probably just as annoyed with James Potter's infatuation with her as with Snape's unceasing cruelty.
Lily has green eyes and red hair. She's very pretty but doesn't flaunt her appearance.
James Potter James Potter was born in a wizarding family. Whether or not his parents believed in the importance of "pure" blood is unknown, but James definitely had no problem with it, as he entertained a crush on Lily for years. Though for a time he was conceited and self-centered, he was always a truly noble, good person at heart, once saving the life of his nemesis, Snape. And when he became aware of his faults through Lily's constant ridicule, he decided to change himself. Therefore, in the fifth year he did not have enough discipline to be a Prefect, but two years later became Head Boy of Hogwarts.
James Potter has unruly black hair and hazel eyes. He does sometimes flaunt his appearance, deliberately messing up his hair "to make it look like he just got off [his] broomstick" (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) to impress people -- namely, Lily. It's possible that Lily and James had to spend an ample amount of time together as Head Boy and Girl, and that this was how they came to love each other, despite their prejudices and differences.
It's difficult to say when Lily and James got married. We know Harry was born in 1980, and we know his parents were still in Hogwarts in the early 70s (James got a Quidditch trophy in '71, I think it was) and we know that Voldemort had power from about 1971 to 1981. We could figure out a pretty decent timeline here if we knew how old James was when he won that trophy; he could have been 12 and married Lily straight out of school 5 years later, or he could have been 17 and waited a long time before marrying Lily and having Harry.
Now I'm just rambling without really saying anything.
