I think about it from James' point of view -- he loves Lily's green eyes -- his life is difficult, full of heartache as his friends in the Order of the Phoenix die -- he sees Lily as proof of life and love, something he needs as danger enfolds them in dark times. He wants Lily to see the same in him, and find comfort and support in him.
