Making a Case from the Young Guys

It seems that Rollie has decided that the starting five of Theo Dixon, Jamaal Harris, Jermaine Robinson, Andre Williams and Tahric Gosley weren't cutting the mustard against Butler. So he decided to cut them loose in the second half of the game and let five other guys step in. Against Butler, this wasn't exactly the best move in the world. But against a team like, say, Youngstown State, maybe Rollie can work on his team of the future (at least theirs) right now.

Of course, this isn't saying that Rollie shouldn't be canned for everything that has and, most likely, will go down the rest of the season. But just as an interesting hypothetical, let's see what the second five would look like in the starting lineup:

G Walt Chavis - Freshman, 5-11, Steelton, Pa.
Chavis has played 17.4 minutes a game thus far, averaging 2.4 points, 2.3 boards and 2.3 assists per game since his debut against Akron, plus he has as many steals in nine games (11) as Robinson does in 14. Rollie seems to be grooming Chavis for the starting point guard position anyway, and a few more minutes at the point wouldn't hurt his development along.

As a starter, Chavis would have to be the general on the court, and perhaps this is something he can fit into right now.

G Percell Coles - Freshman, 6-2, Philadelphia, Pa.
For Coles, the future is apparently now. In less minutes than Harris (19.1 vs. 29.1 per game), Coles has hit almost as many three-pointers (27) as Harris. Also, Coles is already third on the team in scoring with 9.4 points per game.

Coles would do what Harris has tried and has failed to do time and again: Give the Vikings a legitimate shooting threat at guard. Except this time, opponents won't be able to assume that he'll miss, especially with a 45% trey percentage.

F Pape Badiane - Sophomore, 6-11, les Ulis, France
Right now, Badiane, The French Rejection, is listed on the roster as a center. But work with me here, folks. CSU could definitely go big with this second-five lineup. Badiane, eligible again after the NCAA made the assumption that French basketball was the same as playing pro hoops, is ready to go.

Admittedly, I was a little skeptical, coming out flat with four fouls in the loss to Loyola. But The French Rejection came back strong with five blocks and 14 points in the win against UIC. I was hoping that Rollie would have some sense and start Badiane instead of Gosley against Butler. But now, it sounds like a good idea, doesn't it?

John Rabb - Freshman, 6-11, Cleveland, Ohio
Rabb has got some up side, and with a big line-up, he would be the biggest benefactor. And he could be the biggest constributor with most of his scoring coming from inside the paint, a problem Cleveland State has been suffering with ever since the late Sam Mitchell left school in 1994.

And there's no reason to think he's too slow to hack it. How slow could a string-bean (His current weight is a mere 205 lbs.) be?

Pete Ritzema - Freshman, 7-2, Clarkston, Mi.
Admit it. You think I'm on crack. Not exactly.

Back in the mid-1990s, Butler got themselves a conference title and an NCAA berth riding the coat-tails of another 7-2 stiff, Rolf van Rijn. Where is he now? Probably making large wooden shoes somewhere. I don't know.

As bad as everyone, including myself, believe The Project to be, the lack of size in the Horizon League gives him a very important task: stand in front of the basket and put your hands up!

The Rest of the Young Guys
Jarrod Calhoun (So., 6-3, Cleveland, Ohio) has the range and the ups to cover for either Chavis or Coles when they're winded. Tyler Reynolds (Fr., 6-9, Athens, Pa.) can come in if and when The Project finds himself in a situation where he actually has to play basketball. And evidently Rollie is saving Jack Higgins (Fr., 6-6, Pittsburgh, Pa.) for some special occasion like a blow-out or maybe even next year.
