El Regnun Francorum estaba dividido en tres reinos: Austrasia, Neustria y Borgoña. El cargo de mayordomo de palacio de Austrasia había recaído en la persona de Pipino el Joven -también llamado de Herstal- tras la muerte de su padre, Grimoaldo. Decidido a ampliar sus dominios, venció a los de Neustria en el año 687, en Tertry, anexionándose las mayordomías de Neustria y Borgoña. De esta manera, hasta su muerte en el año 714, Pipino se convirtió en el omnipotente dueño de los reinos que formaban el Regnun Francorum.
