Born in Kandy, Sri Lanka, Bhati Jayasuriya moved to Canada in 1988. He soon became seriously involved with fitness training, obtaining certification as a fitness trainer, then shortly after becoming a certified foot Reflexologist through the Ontario College of Reflexology. He developed a successful fitness and reflexology practice in the Toronto area. A professional member of the International Reflexology Association, he seeks to share the therapeutic benefits of foot reflexology, and encourages the integration of reflexology with other therapeutic modalities, in an effort to attain a level of wellness for his clients similar to that he experienced through Ayurvedic treatments passed down through his ancient culture and still practiced in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka (called Ceylon by the British during their "colonization" period that ended in the 1940s), is an island situated in the Indian Ocean, at the base of India. In the 6th century B.C. the Sinhalese came from north India and conquered the island, subduing the native Yakkas. Five centuries before Christ, Sri Lanka was a land throbbing with vitality and a well-ordered civilization. Cities, palaces, reservoirs, parks, temples, monasteries, monuments and works of art bore testament to the character, imagination, culture, philosophy and faith of the people of Sri Lanka, the "Resplendent Land." Vestiges of this ancient civilization are abundantly intact today. European countries - first the Portuguese, then the Dutch and lastly, the British - all took turns at "colonizing" the beautiful island. Kandyan Sinhalese, who reside in the upland hills, retained their traditional culture and resisted European encroachments until 1818. Bhati Jayasuriya and his wife recently moved to Vancouver and are enjoying the climate and the beauty of British Colombia. |
