Football tournament - the first time we got together : Never knew what team work was all about. The first time we got together and we were close to near disaster. Didn't do particularly well but managed a draw with a senior class and lost one game.We were edged out on goal difference.
Table Tennis - not very promising : One more story of first round exits. Ajay, Vikrant, Vinay and myself formed the quartet. I was the only won to win a singles game and Ajay and Vinay did the wonderful job of winning a doubles game under immense pressure.
Carrom tournament - even worse I guess : Can't recollect much about this contest. Surely was not worth remembering. Did not reach too far in the knock-outs. Myself, Vikrant and don't know who represented the class.
Badminton tournament - told CRCE that we were coming : The harbinger of the Thriller that was to unfold. Partha and Kalika defeated many a biggies en-route to the Mixed doubles title !
Cricket tournament - this one is unforgettable : Could fill pages writing about this sport. We somehow managed to get 11 players for this one, played the first game and believe it or not, We Won. That's when a dream began and we made it to the finals. The final was a triangular affair. We lost the first game after reducing the opposition who were chasing 168 to 56 for 6. The next game was simply unnbelievable. Coming to the last round robin match we were up against the indomitable Amit Lopes and his class. The match began with our bowlersbeing thrown all over the park. After 16 overs the score read 144/1. One of the Umpires passes a comment " Jaldi karo Ghar jaane ka hai " That was it, Enter Anuj Shah who 'traps' Lopes in front. Rohan, Partha and Pankaj do the rest. FE PROD sent packing for 187. To win the tournament we need to reach the target in 23 overs, Win we did but in 23.1 overs ! In the euphoria of it all the umpire failed to signal a No-ball for the first ball of the 24th over which would have given us the title. A stupendous innings by Anuj Shah (88*) when all looked lost, a well collected 53 by Partha. A pulsating thriller ! We were a motivated bunch led by Rohan..
Volleyball tournament - nothing achieved : There was absolutely no hope here. Ajay, Vikrant, Shreya, Vinay and myself, we were all useless.
Inter branch cricket tournament - learnt what is aggression : After splendid performances in the inter-class Partha, Rohan and myself were selected for inter-branch. This is when for the first time Computers beat the mighty Prods in a league match but we eventually lost the finals. Well learnt a lot in these games and gained valuable experience.
Football tournament - we believed we could win : We were all very menthu- (mhenti and enthu) for this tournament and practised a lot. We drew the first game with the defending champs and that was what gave us the boost. Everyone knew we could win and we won it. Monu scored in the finals and 1-0 was the score. Jim was our leader then. Pankaj, Abhishek, Ajay, Chau, Bacchu formed the formidable defence. Jim, myself and Vikrant held the team together with impressive midfield play and Partha, Monu, Neeraj did most of the scoring. Partha topped the goal scorers list and Rohan was most impressive in the goal. He did his job really well.
Carrom tournament - same sad story : Once again an early exit and probably the same team. God we need a good break and Sagar.
Table Tennis - not much hope even this year : The second year got Monu as the TT matka and he impressed a few of the college champs. But the team overall got nowhere. Ajay, Vikrant and Monu the losers.
Cricket tournament - were forced to lose this : This was our best chance to win the sports trophy and to do this we had to win cricket. But the Sunil Suranha thought otherwise and three startling umpiring decisions ruled us out at the semi stage. There went our sports trophy- one thing we have not won in four years. Rohan Shetty stood tall among the ruins with a well compiled 40.
Volleyball tournament - won a game for the first time : With lots of crowd support and due to some great serves by me we somehow managed a win. But the glory didn't last for long.....
Inter branch cricket tournament - showed what we were really made of : Everyone was really upset with the semis and we had to show them how good we really were. Didn't allow any hiccups and victory was ours.
Football tournament - thought we could win this : This is the start of the year and we were all eager to win. But that eagerness got over us and we lost in the finals to our only rival class, T.E. Prod. We failed to enjoy the game and that was the reason of our downfall.
Carrom tournament - that's where we started turning the tables : Sagar, Sagar all the way. Obviuosly there was support from Vikrant, Jhakaas Vikas, Pk, Kaka and myself. We beat the defending champs in the semis but lost in the finals.
Table Tennis - we were never that great : This is one sport where we've seriously lacked talent and onc e again inspite of Monu and others not much was achieved..
Cricket tournament - could never lose this game : Last years loss was too much to bear and so we decided that this year not many chances are to be given. Beat our Elex compatriots in the finals -Partha batted well and rohan along with myself handled the bowling department. Dont' miss the onfield heroes in formals. Also check out the snap of ours on the field. These guys were so excited that they lift me up even though I had not accomplished much in that game apart from one spectacular catch and a few wickets.
Volleyball tournament - one more first round exit : Winning never seemed like a possibility with only one person playing well, the rest were only place holders. We vowed we will win atleast one game next year. Let's see.
Inter branch cricket tournament - second successive title : The big guns didn't blast this time around but a spirited effort by the lower middle order namely Abhishek and Ashish led us to the finals. Well let me not be modest I took 7 wickets in the finals - Man of the match - maybe, maybe not. Kalika could be awarded the woman of the spectators. The players know it why.
Cricket tournament - girls. As good as us : This needs some mention. The captain Kalika led from the front and well aided by Preeti- the hard-hitter from Kashmir zilla. As also there were Mad-pad, smita, prajakta, rachna and many more. They used to set targets of 80's and 75's in 8 overs. Great batting batswomen. Good going. We had to win. I was the coach and there are many other claims for that. Partha, Abhishek didn't miss a match.
Football tournament - none of us were interested : They purposely kept the tournament at this time. Everyone was busy with their GRE's. Pankaj, Abhishek, Vikrant all played for the class though. We were not at our full strength. Lost most of the games but somehow made it to the semis. But lost to B.E.Elex and my goodness how much they talk.
Carrom tournament - this was an individual event : Sagar didn't go far and the others failed to go past the first round.
Table Tennis - an individual event : Don't remember if any one played. GRE time man.
Cricket tournament - didn't play one tough match : These guys were no competition at all and fortunately this time around it was more of a team effort and everyne contributed. Rohan got the first fifty of his career and he finally answered his critics. All this while he was shining only with the ball and now it was the bat. Great job, Rohan !
Volleyball tournament - WE WON THE TOURNAMENT : Here's the surprise packet. Not many wins to show in the past years but this time it was like India winning the world cup in 1983. With each game we grew in confidence and started craving for wins. Not all of us knew we could win but Partha always did. A total team effort and even if one of us was missing then it would have not been possible. Partha, PK, Bhau, Vinay, Vikrant, Ajay and myself did a wonderfu; job. Btw I was the captain.....
Inter branch cricket tournament - can't believe it we lost the finals : Rohan Shettys dream run with bat continues ! making 70 of 52 balls. I returned to form with a 66*. Personally I just could not believe it that we lost the finals. We had not lost a game since the semis in S.E and it was dreadful. After 17 straight wins we finally lost ! We didn't do much with the bat and fielded a slight below par. However we managed to fight till the finish and there is no shame in losing. No one died and the sun came out the other day but still we lost. On the destined day nothing works.
The girls throwball - Hum isse to acche the yaar : We always thought that we had a grerat time but then they must not have performed to their potential. Could be who cares, they lost something like 15-3 and 15-4 or less. However they took part and we enjoyed every moment of it. I was the physiotherapist and someone else must have been the coach. The reason we lost was that the coach always managed to concentrate more on the other classes. The grass is always greener on the other side.
The girls carrom- Reenal and Preeti win again : The guys must not have been good but the girls were. Reenal won the tournament and Moti stood third. They play well I think or maybe the opponents can't bear all the talking.
So all in all a wonderful experience on and off the field. But what I have failed to do so far is the mention a word or two about the support that we have received from the class members. I have not seen so many spectators as were present for all our cricket and football matches. Even the TT and carrom matches in the gym drew heavy crowds from the class. I have always been wondering what was the reason. Kalika, Preeti, Mrinmayee and many others were always there on the field, as active as the players themselves. This is to thank everyone who had been there to watch us all play. It was their support that enforced the competitive spirit in most of us and cramps in Partha ofcourse. They also made chau miss the goal and Pankaj lose his pendant and what not. But thank u anyways.
