A Brief UTEP History
|
The University of Texas at El Paso is a public, coeducational university, and a member of the University of Texas System. UTEP is located on the diamond corner of the Rio Grande where Texas, New Mexico and the country of Mexico meet. UTEP is the largest university in the nation with a majority Mexican-American student population.
Founded in 1914 as The Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy, a mineshaft still exists on the mountainous, desert campus. The campus located at the base of the Franklin mountains is composed of buildings of Bhutanese architecture, with massive sloping walls and overhanging roofs. In 1967 the Board of Regents authorized the name of the college to be changed from Texas Western College to The University of Texas at El Paso. Currently, there are more than 18,900 students enrolled at UTEP. 80 percent of UTEP's student population is Hispanic. UTEP is the country's only doctoral research intensive university with a student body that is predominantly Mexican-American. UTEP offers 81 bachelor's degrees, more than 70 master's-level degrees and programs and 13 doctoral degrees. The university ranks second in federal research spending among UT System academic institutions, with expenditures reaching $35 million a year.
In the mid-1950s, UTEP then known as Texas Western College, became the first college in a Southern state to integrate its intercollegiate athletic teams even though the campus population was less than 1% African-American. In 1966, basketball coach Don Haskins and his Texas Western Miners thrilled the nation by winning the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship over the University of Kentucky with an all-black starting lineup breaking an unspoken barrier and transforming the history of college basketball forever.

UTEP Athletic Hi-lights
|
To the surprise of many the UTEP baskeball team is not the only athletic team to garner national attention. UTEP's athletic programs have won a total of 21 NCAA Division I national championships. UTEP is currently tied for 10th overall among schools in Men's Sports Division I championships. As of the date of this writing (8/29/07) no UTEP women's teams have won a national championship. UTEP is also the home of the nations 3rd oldest bowl game the Sun Bowl.
- Men's basketball: 1
- Men's cross country: 7
- Men's indoor track & field: 7
- Men's outdoor track & field: 6
The UTEP football team has not made the list of national champions as of yet. Still my favorite sport to watch is football and listed below are special bowl seasons in UTEP's football history.

|
|
In college football a bowl game is a reward and recognition for a well played season. It means national television exposure for the selected team and several hundred thousand dollars minimum for the football program and the university. UTEP has had the privilege of having been invited to twelve bowl games winning five of the games. Below are listed each of the bowl game results along with a game by game listing of the season that lead to the bowl invitation. The bowl posters are not the actual bowl posters with the exception of the 2000 Humanitarian Bowl which is the actual poster. The other posters are my creations and use the actual bowl logo. The team helmets, where possible, are the team helmet at the time of the bowl game or at least from at close to it as I could find.
The helmets used in my posters come from a website called
The Helmet Project. If you ever wanted to know how your college or professional team's helmet has changed over the years take a look. Another interesting website on college football that is also interesting is called
My Favorite Bowls. It doesn't have information on every bowl game ever played, but it has quite a few.
