Music

Michelle Branch - The Spirit Room Michelle Branch

"Everywhere", "You Get Me", "All You Wanted", "You Set Me Free"... 12 top songs from this rocking girl who plays their own instruments and loves very much Dylan, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Cat Stevens and The Beatles. Michelle Branch: a name to remember.

Badly Drown Boy - Have You Fed the Fish? Badly Drown Boy

It's hard to remember, listening to Have You Fed the Fish, that Badly Drawn Boy was once derided as lo-fi. On Damon Gough's third album, everything is writ large, his wobbly and whimsical songs transformed into bombastic epics. Finally, his much-vaunted Springsteen obsession starts making sense.

Bring on the Night  Sting Sting

When Sting embarked on his solo career, he didn't throw his tenure with the Police out the window; on this live double album from his Dream of the Blue Turtles tour, he reworks some odd selections from his old band's catalogue in the expansive, jazz-inflected style of his new crew (which included saxophonist Branford Marsalis).

Armadillo by William Boyd William Boyd - Armadillo

'Mr. Dupree was simultaneously the first dead person he had encountered in his life, his first suicide and his first hanged man and Lorimer found this congruence of firsts deceptively troubling.' As a London dweller and life-observer, Boyd picks up on some of the great morass of variety that this capital has to offer. Lorimer Black is a protagonist we can feel sympathy for in the way in which he is treated by his unscrupulous employers and his emotionally blackmailing family.

Anthony Burgess - A Clockwork Orange Burgess, Anthony

When A Clockwork Orange was published in 1962, it was considered sheer Science Fiction. But Anthony Burgess intended this novel, properly novella, to be a study on free will and psychological behaviourism. Burgess's nightmare vision of youth culture, which made him famous as a satirical novelist, offers a gripping insight into the life of a disturbed young man. The imagery is superb, and the details with which the violence is described are never gratuitous. The reader is left breathless, outraged, excited, concerned.

Leonardo DiCaprio sought to distance himself from the cloying wholesomeness of his character in Titanic, and his role in The Beach is in many ways a polar opposite. Here he is Richard, a young American seeking to "suck in the experience" of freestyle travel.

Unbelieveably moving tale of war and comradeship that shows that the Americans CAN and DO make excellent TV. A truly epic show! What makes this drama unusual is the refusal to Hollywoodise events or to gloss over mistakes.
What makes Band of Brothers so special, is that it focuses on the bonds of brotherhood that are forged in basic training, and on the fields of battle, and shows how this relates to each character, and shows the personal battle each man must face, and conquer, with only himself, and the men next to him.
Brilliant acting, and a care for detail are what make this a series above par, with any other series on television. Coproduced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.
