Long long ago, in a galaxy far far away... |

I was in Vietnam between Nov 1070 and Nov 1971 at 110 Signal Squadron 1ALSG Vung Tau. I wrote a play Baggy Green Skin about the experience. The incidents contained therein are largely true, but the characters, of course are fictionalised to protect the guilty. Even so if you were there and your memory's working you'll probably recognise a line or two lifted from real people.

We were young. We were brash. We were conscripted. We were sent to Vietnam I was in the Corp of Signals and did my national service in Australia at 2 Signal Regiment. To be perfectly truthful I volunteered for Vietnam - God knows what posessed me - and did a 12 month tour at 110 Signal Squadron, Vung Tau. For any young bloke time spent in a war zone is a seminal experience. It changes you. The memories become vivid moments, reverberating unexpectedly as you walk the corridors of your life. Spinning you in unexpected directions. The funny thing is WHAT you remember. At the left are some pages torn at random from my soul... and some of the pictures torn at random from my scrap books. In fact the pictures are a good aid to your memory. I'd forgotten those green tiles on the floor of the Sandbaggers Inn (the Other Rank's canteen). God knows I had to mop them often enough. And here they are in the photos, living again in all of their blah-ness. If you mopped those tiles you might welcome seeing them again. Well they're here. Enjoy.
