A cross is known to have many of different meanings. Most clearly it is a symbol of Christianity and religion. In Buffyverse it also represents a weapon against evil, as unholy creatures such as vampires cannot come near to one. Same goes to holy water. So religion has a big part in all of this. But that is not all.
The cross Angel gave Buffy, is another one of the 2 jewelleries given to Buffy in the series. There, it has a meaning other than religion. Most clearly it is a weapon against the evil things that go bump in the night and as we know, later also a shield against Buffy's first true love himself, as he becomes Angelus. Also it could be seen as a hidden token of love, when he first gave it to Buffy. He must have been in love with her since then, as we found out in "Helpless" ("I watched you come down the stairs...and I loved you").
Interesting. Having to use your love (a gift given by a loved one) against the one you love. Interesting...and complicated as well.
More of those hidden meanings than one can count. So to find out the truth, you have to read between the lines. The answers cannot always be found directly, but demand a little work to come out. Don't always go with what your mind says, also listen to your heart.
