June 1999

So the movie "Notting Hill" is out now in both the States and in the UK (hope to catch it this weekend). Brings back memories of a year ago (has it been that long ago?) when I bumped into you, for the first time, at Notting Hill. The stars were in alignment that day for certain. I was back in London on the morning of the day before my return to the States. The past three days were blissful, having attended blur's gigs in Reading, Birmingham and Bath. It was fun to travel with just a small travel bag and on the buses and the train from London to Reading to London to Birmingham to Bath to London again. The enviable Glastonbury "backpackers" were in full force at all the bus stations. Unfortunately, due to my schedule, I could not stay for Glastonbury and the Meltdown (though I was dying to do so). What better way to spend my last day in London than to visit Notting Hill and to chill out there. Upon arrival at Notting Hill Gate, I window-shopped, going in and out of the boutiques, galleries and stores that lined the Portobello Road. I stopped by an internet cafe' and e-mailed a couple of my friends saying how I've seen a couple of Jarvis look-alikes, but no one who resembled you. I then headed furtherdown the road, discovered a cafe', realized that I had not had anything to eat yet that day (it was past 3PM), and sat down to place an order of chickpea curry with rice and an iced cafe' mocha. Apologies were profuse when the waiter told me that they had nothing left to eat except sweets. Not feeling like sweets for a late brunch, I settled for just the iced cafe' mocha. As I was soaking up the atmosphere and sipping my drink, I saw you walking quickly down the street. Although you were disguised, I knew that it was you from your walk and your general appearance. By the time that I had found money to pay for the drink, I had lost sight of you, but something told me that you'd be back this way again. Bingo! Less than 10 minutes later you come walking back, and that was when I went up to you and introduced myself. You were gracious, interested and engaging. I ended up talking with you about "South Park" and cartoons, when there were many other things that I really wanted to talk about with you. Remember me? The dark-eyed traveller from the States who resembled the squaws who you encountered during your stay in the Pacific Northwest shortly thereafter?
