dear damon

August 1999

Looks like you had a great time in Japan. I had just as great a time in Dublin on July 22nd at the Point! Your gig was a smashing success, and a thoroughly grand one for me especially as it took place on my birthday. You know, one of the security staff let me into the front section when I explained that it was my b-day. So there I was, in the second row in front of the stage on Graham's side (though I wanted to move into the middle so that I could be directly in front of you, I was too chicken to do so!) The set list was just brilliant and I was ecstatic about the variety of songs that you chose to perform from every one of your CDs (with the exception of TGE). Thank you especially for "This is a Low," which was a personal high for me...

It was doubly wonderful to be in Dublin for the gig as it gave me a chance to finally meet with an Italian friend that I had made through the Internet. We had afternoon tea together (just lovely!) and chatted about our love for blur and what we were doing with our lives. Someone had once commented how all that we blur fanatics had in common was blur, and that if we didn't talk about blur, then we'd have nothing to talk about. How further from the truth this was with Francesca...It was blur, though, that brought us together, and for this, I thank you...

It was triply memorable because I was able to stay at Oscar Wilde's alma mater, Trinity College, and absorb some of the ambiance of that venerable campus. Oscar Wilde's writings spoke to me when I was a high school student in much the same way that your music has touched the deep recesses of my soul. For me, blur's "13" is the equivalent of Wilde's "De Profundis." Never lose your soul, damon... for you are the metronome by which I play the music of my life...

Fondly,
frances
