April 1999
One day I was listening to damon's singing on "On Your Own"(the blur live at MC Vrendenburg, Utrecht, Holland on April 29, 1997 version) and found myself screaming "Mick!" as I listened to the ending of the song. Why was this? damon's falsetto towards the end where he repeatedly sings "then you're on your own...Oooh.." reminded me of Mick's falsetto towards the end of the Stones' song, where he repeatedly sings "tell me baby, what's my name... Oooh.." That Stones song is "Sympathy for the Devil." There's more that the two songs have in common and that is that they both deal with spiritual themes. In the words of damon," "On Your Own" is about dying and going nowhere," the state of the soul in limbo. "Sympathy for the Devil"is, well, about you-know -who. The soul in limbo is at risk of getting snatched up by the man with the pitchfork, as it is, at the same time, being provided with the opportunity of being given the keys to heaven.
