Name that Tune!

Did a blur song ever remind you of another song?

July 1999

Yes! Finally recognized the guitar and bass portions in "Coffee & TV" as the reincarnation of a oldie, but goodie. That oldie was "I Will Follow Him" by "Little" Peggy March which went to number 1 in 1964. Peggy March was given the "Little" part as a nickname because she was only 15 years old when she sang this song (kinda like the Britney Spears of the 60's, huh?) Some of you may know this song as the song that the sisters sang in "Sister Act." It was a number 1 U.K. hit by Petula Clark entitled "Chariot" even before Peggy sang it over 35 years ago.

The vocal in the chorus which begins with "Love him, I love him, I love him, and where he goes I follow, I follow, I follow..." is strikingly similar to the guitar and bass portions of "Coffee & TV." Curiously, "Coffee & TV" also reminded me of blur's very own "Beetlebum," because the guitar and bass portions are slowed down versions of the very same in "Coffee & TV." Everything begins to gel together when you recall how Graham had made a comment about how damon's parents and people of their generation who got into Gong and prog rock would "get" "13." Yup, everything old IS new again. Bravo!
