From the Olympics to grassroots cultural sport exchanges, sport has become increasingly relevant as an avenue for international leaders in the academic, business, government and athletic communities to develop communication and cultural understanding. Due to today's tumultuous political climate and as part of America's on-going commitment to be an interactive citizen of the globe, Understand the Game will act as a conduit for American goodwill by providing a reciprocal educational and informational sports exchange program. Partnering with high-profile individuals, organizations and corporations, Understand the Game is conducting a high-profile “American” style regional coaches summit in Malaysia and in return it will select four aspiring Malaysian coaches for basketball related internships in the United States.
Understand the Game’s mission is to promote basketball instruction strategies and tactics to teach the techniques of basketbal communicate American culture and build future leaders of basketball coaches to carry on the positive messages of sports diplomacy in Malaysia. The campaign will also make a dedicated effort to enhance the lives of underprivileged youth in Malaysia through orphanage and hospital visits, as well as charitable donations. Detlef Schrempf, a German native and U.S. citizen, two-time NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award Winner and multiple All Star Game veteran, symbolizes the effectiveness and reward of international sports exchange. Now more than ever, he recognizes the need for utilizing the power of sport to promote understanding. Since his days as a NBA star, Detlef has focused on helping children through his foundation. With his charitable work he has continually seen the power of grassroots efforts and their ability to make a difference. Those who have endorsed Understand the Game include NBA Commissioner, David Stern; NBA Player's Association Executive Director, Billy Hunter and veteran NBA Executive, Bob Whitsitt. |
