...From Tag (The American Genealogist), April 1992, Vol. 67, No,2, "The English Origin of Robert Blott of Charlestown and Boston, Mass" by Penny G. Douglass

".....His will and other Massachusetts records indicate that he had children Mary, married before 1639 Thomas Woodford; daughter, married first a Green, and second a Tosier; Joanna, married 1644-45 Daniel Lovett; Lydia, married before August 1646 Daniel Turin or Turell; and Sarah, born about 1631, married 1652 Edward Ellis."

The TAG article goes on to speculate that Robert may have been the son of an earlier Robert of Harrold, who left a will dated 03 Jan. 1609/10. He mentions a wife Elizabeth, and sons William, John, Robert, Thomas; and daughters Marye, Alice, Edith (or Judith), and Joane. This article, and the subsequent one, "John Black of Charlestown Was Really Robert Blott" by Robert Charles Anderson both concur, by the way, that Robert had only one wife, Susanna Selbee. ...

William Holton came from Ipswich, England to America in April, 1634, age 23, in the ship "Francis" and settled eventually at Hartford, CT where he was one of the original proprietors. The passenger ship list is printed in the "Register," Vol 14, pg. 331 where his name is listed as "William Haulton."

Savage does not know from which MA town he came to Hartford. William and his family later moved to Northampton, MA in 1655 where William was the first deacon of the church, ordained 13 May 1663; he was also a representative in 1664, 1667, 1669-167, once for the town of Hadley.

NICHOLAS NORTON is assumed to have emigrated from Somersetshire and probably came from the vicinity of Batcombe or Broadway. The Norton family was long settled in Somersetshire where the name was generally spelled NOURTON and NURTON in earlier records. The first known ancestor of Nicholas Norton was WILLIAM NORTON, a tanner of White Lackington (about 1540), described as the eldest of the family but his parentage is not known. He had two younger brothers, JOHN NORTON (a tanner) and ROBERT NORTON (residing in the cathedral city of Wells where he followed the occupation of innholder). WILLIAM NORTON was born about 1535, and among other children he had Nicholas born 1562 and William. Nicholas, born in 1562, and the father of Nicholas Norton, the emigrant, had children: John born about 1590, Joan, James, Joseph, Nicholas born 1610 (the emigrant) and Elizabeth. NICHOLAS NORTON, the emigrant, married Elizabeth (ISAAC? -gw-)(last name unknown), but perhaps in Weymouth MA. No record of his marriage has been found. They had 11 children: Isaac, Jacob, Elizabeth, Hannah, Joseph, Sarah, Priscilla, Ruth, Benjamin, Esther and Mary

Mary Blott, mother of Mary Woodford, was born in 1609 at Harold, Bedfordshire, England. She came to America in with her parents. The Roxbury MA church records show "Mary Blott, a maid servant, came in 1632, and married Steward Woodford of this church she lived in Christian sort." She married Thomas Woodford on March 4, 1635. The couple had four daughters, Mary, Hannah, Thankful, and Sarah, and two sons, Nehemiah and Joseph. She died at age 51, predeceasing her father, in Northampton or Boston MA on January 10, 1660; her will was proved May 27, 1662.

Thomas Woodford, father of Mary Woodford, was born about 1612 in Roxbury, Lincoln, England. He arrived in America on June 5, 1632, from London March 9 aboard the "William and Francis." The next record of him is at Roxbury, MA, where the Reverend John Eliot, the "Apostle to the Indians," wrote in the church records (language updated): "Thomas Woodford, a manservant, came to New England in 1632 and joined the church about half a year later; he afterwards married Mary Blott, and moved to CT, joining the church in Hartford." Thomas became a freeman of the MA Bay Colony March 4, 1634/45. He is mentioned in the Compact of Settlers of 1636 at Springfield, CT(MA?-gw-). He received six acres of land at Hartford, CT, in 1639, and was hired by the city to maintain fences and to impound loose animals. In 1640 he was also a gravedigger. He owned several parcels of land around Hartford. In 1654 the Woodfords moved to Northampton, MA, along with their daughter Mary and son-in-law Isaac Sheldon, where he was elected one of the Townsmen in 1657. The Northampton church was organized June 18, 1661, and Thomas was the third signer of the formal document. He wrote his will April 26, 1665, naming Isaac Sheldon executor. In early 1666 he asked to be excused from court duty because of age and weakness. He died in Northampton, aged 65, on March 6, 1667. His estate was valued at 197 pounds.

The Reverend [minister] John Williams was ransomed [rescued] in 1706 by Ensign John Sheldon who had traveled to Canada...

DEERFIELD, MA:
Although the open meadows provided a degree of protection, Deerfield suffered from the fear and reality of Indian and French attack. The settlement was abandoned during King Philip's War after a 1675 attack at Bloody Brook (now South Deerfield) in which over 60 English had been killed, including fourteen Deerfield settlers, more than one-third of the village's men. Deerfield was resettled in 1682, but there were several attacks in the 1690s and finally the devastating raid of February 29, 1704, when 48 were killed, 111 marched off to captivity in Canada, and the village once again abandoned.
