Built at the foot of Mount Giona 15 km northwest of Galaxidi lays one of the most heroic traditional Greek villages where it's people are well-known for their genuine hospitality and love for food and dance.

On April 10th 1943 the village was burned to the ground and the occupational forces of Second World War executed 33 of its men and women. The Greek state has recognized Vounichora as a "heroic martyric village" and declared Easter Monday as a local holiday. Easter Sunday is celebrated in the great "Roumeli" tradition, where the residents roast lambs and "kokoretsia" in the streets offering "mezedes", red eggs and wine to all visitors.
