Homework

Second Grade students should spend at least 30 minutes each night on their homework assignments.  Their daily homework assignments are completing three facts about their school day in their Nightly Notebook, studying the weekly Spelling words, and reading for at least 15 minutes on their Accelerated Reader or other book of their choice.  The Nightly Notebook involves writing, reading, and thinking skills so that you can be informed about your child's activities they participated in at school that day.  My primary purpose for assigning homework is so that you can be involved with your child's education and know what they are working on in class.  I provide practice-type homework assignments to help students practice and learn the basic math and reading skills.  Parents are encouraged to check these assignments.  This reminds students and parents that learning takes place all of the time.

HOMEWORK HINTS TO HELP YOU AT HOME:

  1. Provide a quiet place to do the homework assignments and a regular, consistent time each day.  Students want and need a regular routine.

  2. Keep pencils, paper, and other supplies in a centrally located area.

  3. Look over your child's work but make sure the student completes the work on their own.

  4. Show your child that homework is important to you and help them practice their basic skills.  Be a good role model and encourage learning in all areas.  Let your child see you reading and writing.
