Mrs. Smith's Second Grade Class
Thomas Merton Academy
Daily Schedule
8:00-8:15 OPENING PRAYERS, WTMA MORNING
SHOW, LUNCH COUNT
8:15-8:30 NIGHTLY NOTEBOOK-Students share their three facts about their school
day. This is their nightly homework assignment that is used as a
communication tool between the home and school. It encourages writing
skills and memory skills and helps the family know what their child did at
school that day. The students write at least three sentences about what
they worked on in class. The students share their Nightly Notebook every
morning to start our day with a review of skills and practicing oral reading.
8:30-8:45 DAILY LETTER-This activity is a mini-lesson in phonics, spelling, and
grammar skills. Each day I write a friendly letter to the class on chart
paper about our day's activities. The students read and circle words using
context clues and other reading skills. Later in the year we practice
filling in the blanks using our vocabulary and spelling words.
8:45-9:00 CALENDAR TIME-We begin our Math
class each day using the calendar. We tell time by using the day, month,
and year, as well as using our class schedule to tell time to the hour,
half-hour, five-minute mark, and elapsed time between classes. We use our
money board to count money. We also work on measuring, number patterns,
"problem of the day", and the weather graph.
9:00-10:00 MATH-The students use a
variety of manipulatives and hands-on activities to practice their math
skills. We also work in our Addison-Wesley textbook. The students
work on problem solving strategies in their math journal. For extra drill
and practice we use math games and flashcards.
10:00-11:00 READING-We
use a variety of strategies and methods to practice our reading skills. We
use the basal reader, phonics books, and regular trade books. One of our
favorite activities is working in our Poetry Pages. The students read and
illustrate a selected poem in their "Poetry Pages" notebook. We
do choral reading, partner reading, and independent reading with the
poems. While the students are illustrating the poem we listen to classical
music to encourage our creativity. We use poems that are related to themes
we are studying in other subjects like math, reading, science, or
religion. The students enjoy sharing their poems once a week on the school
newscast. They bring their "Poetry Pages" home on Thursday to
share with their family.
