Main Speakers
When choosing
main speakers you have 2 basic options. One is choosing your main speaker
as a tower speaker or floor standing speaker, best teamed up with large
subwoofer. The other way is choosing a front bookshelf speaker best paired
with smaller subwoofers for a more compact sound system.
Tower Speakers
: Towers can be of two general types, 2-way or 3-way. 2-way means
that they have a high frequency driver(tweeter) and a low frequency driver(woofer).
A 3-way tower will have that plus a midrange speaker, thus enhancing the
critical midrange area(dialogue in movies, etc.). Generally when choosing
a tower, consider having an included midrange. Good Tower speaker frequencies
should be below 50 Hz and above 20,000 Hz. Normal Towers have about 150-200
Watt capability but the extreme ones go further.
Bookshelf Speakers
: Bookshelves are generally smaller than towers, and are usually two
way units, although 3-way units are not uncommon. Typically, bookshelves
have lower wattage capability. Follow the same guidelines when purchasing
a bookshelf as the one to purchasing a tower.
