Dolby Digital and DTS(Digital Surround)

Dolby Surround...

Dolby Digital and DTS are currently the most widely used multi-channel sound technologies for the home theater. They both feature 5 channel separation, where each speaker is given the full frequency range, unlike Dolby Surround, which deny bass and treble frequencies to the central and surround speakers. In addition, they also feature a 6th channel for the subwoofer(Dolby Surround does not have a dedicated channel for subwoofer).

Dolby Digital and DTS are both identical in its channel separation capabilities, but some people prefer DTS over Dolby Digital because of its lower signal compression rate(density packed into the prerecorded disc). Dolby has a high compression rate, meaning a lot of information is compressed onto the prerecorded disc. The lower compression rate of DTS should mean that less translation errors will occur, in other words, the original encryption is left untouched, but there is no significant difference between the two sound technologies, they are only encoded differently.
