Stories She Wrote...

Geeta had a natural flare for story-writing - and what she wrote was spontaneous, written at one go, without the process of drafting and redrafting. Writing stories, for her, was almost like a story-teller dictating to herself.

Unfortunately, she didn't write many stories - I wish she had. The first three of her stories reproduced here, date back to early parts of '80s... this was also the time when we had first time moved out of the comfortable cacoon of family and institute - a kind of first entry into the social adult world. In many ways these stories also represent the process of coming to terms with this new reality. For Geeta, this reality was inhabited by a rich variety of personalities, who, more often than not, interacted with each other in a rather clumsy manner - more so because most social situations seemed to revolve around an implicit aim of politely disguising their own inherent anamolies...

I always liked this story, even though it is rather depressing, and makes me feel uncomfortable. Written sometimes in 81-82, it also represented some of the fears Geeta had about her new "role" as a potential housewife.

          Papa's Last Summer

This was a delightful story, with a touch of - if you knew Geeta's background - irreverance. I think it also portrayed a kind of relationship which she she wanted to have, but never had...

          Counselling Rita

We both loved this story, particularly since it was so near to our social reality then. It is hilarious in a very cynical way... in another perspective, for Geeta, it also represented the process of accepting the built-in artificiality of social interactions... and her attempts to go beyond them.

          The Jungle of Maths

Written for Manasi, I would rate this one as her masterpiece. It blends all the elements of a fairy tale with what for many is the frightening reality of mathematics. Manasi will find Geeta's own dislike and mental block for maths difficult to understand - because now Manasi enjoys maths...
