★ Harry Potter
harry potter
Harry Potter is the protagonist of Harry Potter. When he was a baby, Voldemort killed his parents, but as Voldemort tried to kill him, his spell back fired and he lost all of his power. As Harry grew older and learned of the magical world, Harry wanted to kill Voldemort to avenge his parents.
The famous quote of Social Contract, "Man was born free, and he is everywhere in chains" (47) means that man was born free and has choices, but is tied down by obligations and responsibilities. For Harry Potter, he is a normal boy but is pressured to kill Voldemort by the rest of the magical world because he had defeated Voldemort before.
Harry's particular will to defeat Voldemort is the same as the general will. Rousseau says, "it is not impossible for a private will to coincide with a general will...[but] the private will inclines toward partiality, and the general will towards equality" (69). This means that private will and general will can be the same but the private will is for an individual, while the general will includes everyone. Although, Harry's and the people's will are the same in the fact that they want to defeat Voldemort, Harry's is for revenge whille the people want safety. However, according to Rousseau, for both wills to be the same is almost inconcievable.
