Hebraism

(Cont'd from Page 1)
world.

Western civilization is rooted in two cultures: Hebraism and Hellenism. The disharmony between the two reflects the disunity of the mind and body. The great saints and sages of history: Moses, Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, Confucius and others, sacrificed the body to realize the ideals of the mind. We are different from animals because of our sense of freedom and responsibility. In the 20th century, however, there has been a concerted effort to put down the importance of the internal guiding values.

Sigmund Freud referred to “three blows” that religion and Christianity, in particular, have suffered since the sixteenth century: the “cosmological blow”—the heliocentric view of the universe; the “biological blow,” resulting from Darwinism; and the “psychological blow,” in which he said that; “aggression, lust, greed and selfishness were not evil but humanity’s latent animal-like nature.” We now live in a world where the notions of right and wrong are blurred.

In 1972, Rev. Moon launched the International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences. His focus was: “Modern Science and the Quest for Absolute Values.” He held that God, the Original and Absolute Being exists, and is our Parent. He is the Source of absolute values of truth, beauty, goodness, and love which should guide our conduct.

Rev. Moon recognizes that humanity’s profound desire to realize world peace is represented by the United Nations. The UN has played a key role in preventing several international conflicts, helped in promoting human rights, and in fostering solidarity among many nations, but it needs to be supported by a spiritual or religious aspect. The great faiths of history share common values and ideals. This is the reason why Rev. Moon sponsored the World Scripture project, showing the values and morals common to the religions of the world. He also created IIFWP so that the religious and political leaders could work together for world peace.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are confident that the future holds hope for greater cooperation among us all.

May God bless this new initiative for world peace and each of you as a pioneer.

Abraham and Isaac

Abraham and Isaac came to visit me. Abraham is a good-looking and gentle-hearted person. When I told him that I would like to visit his place, he told me, people around him are able to attend God well, bowing down to God in the morning and evening, according to the Heavenly law. When I spoke of Isaac being offered by him, he said: “I made special efforts in attending God. There was nothing that I could reject or deny in God’s voice…. At 100, He gave me a son. The preciousness of this son was indescribable. I was immersed in enjoying him, almost forgetting to make offerings to God….

As he grew, he was interested in everything I was doing. He loved me very much. He would say, ‘Father, why is there no water on the altar? God will be very upset with this. I will bring water for Him.’ In such a way he grew in health and wisdom. One day, God called me and said, ‘Abraham, I would like to receive an offering from you, which may be a difficult one to make. Will you still do it for me?’ I replied, ‘I’ll do whatever you ask me to do.’ Then God said: ‘Abraham, I would like you to offer your precious son, Isaac.’ I thought I misheard Him, therefore I asked again, ‘What have you said?’ He answered, ‘I told you to offer your son.’

“I could not tolerate the pain caused by this, everything seemed so dark. I was in torment for several days. Isaac came to me and asked if something was wrong. I told him, ‘God wanted me to make an offering.’ He was surprised, and asked, ‘Father, why are you taking so long to carry out God’s direction?’
