Introduction

This lesson was developed in the course Teaching with WebQuests , a course offered by the  Teacher Education Institute .  The lesson will provide the student with many different perspectives of the immigration process during the late 1800's through the early 1900's.  In the end the student will produce a creative, historical narrative about a character's journey to the United States during the time period.  They will also assume the role of that person and present their story to the class.  Throughout the process they will be required to periodically email me with reflections of what they have learned along the way.

This lesson originated from an earlier project where the students used only library books and class discussion to create their story, and there was no presentation portion.  I decided to adapt the original project because it has been a liked topic in the past by my students.  Currently the project is set up for an individual student to assume the role of one person either alone or in a family and tell their story.  It allows the students the choice to become a child, parent, grandparent, friend, etc.  It can also be modified so that a small group takes on the role of a family and each member is responsible for becoming a part of that family.  There is only one drawback that I have noticed on this topic, too many students choosing the same nation for their character's homeland.  I have limited the use of nations in the past, but at the same time no 2 stories will really be the same due to creativity, or sources researched.
