~ A GUIDE TO MARIO CHARACTERS ~
Section P-Z
NAME: Paragoomba
GAME(S):
Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Paper Mario
INFO:
In essence, these enemies are Goombas with wings. Sometimes they carry little baby Goombas with them. As with Paratroopas, the wings can be knocked off.

NAME: Parakarry
GAME(S):
Paper Mario
INFO:
Parakarry is a good-hearted Koopa Paratroopa, but not the best postman in the world. See, he lost a whole bunch of letters around the Mushroom Kingdom, and joins Mario so he can find them again. Delivering lost letters gets you rewards (and usually, another letter to deliver!). Parakarry can also carry Mario across small gaps.

NAME: Pauline
GAME(S):
Donkey Kong
INFO:
The damsel in distress from Mario's days of antiquity, Pauline was literally the first. Captured by the raging Donkey Kong and carried up a building, Pauline's only hope was to be saved by Mario (whose name wasn't even Mario then, it was so far back!) She was his first love, back in ol' Brooklyn. After that...she vanished.

NAME: Pirahna Plant
GAME(S):
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario, Super Mario World, Mario Party, Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, etc.
INFO:
Pirahna Plants are some of the most annoying varieties of enemies in Bowser's whole army. Normally, they are pipe-infesting plants with a taste for plumbers, but these are probably the most varied enemies there are, and have spawned walking, flame-spitting, spike-spitting, Yoshi-and-Mario-eating, and many many more kinds of Pirahnas. They also make very persistent boss material, with Naval Pirahna, Lava Pirahna, and Megasmilax all being giant boss versions. Tread carefully by these deadly weeds! ^^

NAME: Podoboo
GAME(S):
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario 64, Yoshi's Island, Paper Mario, Mario Party, Party 2, Party 3
INFO:
These enemies only seem to inhabit castles, fortresses, and heavily lava-y areas. Naturally enough, seeing how they are fireballs. You know the type--those ones that seem to leap from the lava just as you're jumping over it, effectively sealing your doom? Those're Podoboos. Someone needs to douse them...^^

NAME: Pokey
GAME(S):
Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario World, Paper Mario
INFO:
Pokey, naturally, is a happy yellow cactus enemy. They amble along the ground, just waiting to bump into Mario, being impervious to his fireballs and all. Yoshi can eat them, but in PM, where no Yoshi is there to help, Mario better hope he has the Spike Shield Badge! Or run really fast.

NAME: Poochy
GAME(S):
Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Story
INFO:
You cannot not like Poochy. Really, there is a federal law forbidding it. Why? Because Poochy is not only an adorable, slobbery dog creature, he's darn helpful. He randomly shows up to ferry Yoshi over dangerous spikes and the like, always with that loveable tongue-filled smile on his face. Goooo Poochy!

NAME: Potted Ghost, The
GAME(S):
Yoshi's Island
INFO:
The boss of world 2, the Potted Ghost is literally a haunted flower arrangement. It doesn't sound threatening, of course, but he can spit fire, and has two li'l Shy Guys helping to push him away from the edge of the platform, that, of course, you would really enjoy pushing him off of. And, Yoshi does. ^^

NAME: Prince Froggy
GAME(S):
Yoshi's Island
INFO:
This boss, the halfway-boss for World 3, is interestingly enough the only boss that Kamek does not use magic to enhance in the game. Instead, he shrinks Yoshi, forcing him to brave the, well, digestive juices of Froggy. Using the Shy Guys he ingests to attack his insides enough, and well, he croaks. ^_^

NAME: Princess Peach Toadstool
GAME(S):
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, Mario Party, 2, 3, Mario Tennis, Golf, Paper Mario
INFO:
If you ever wanted to know what it's like to be the Center of the Universe, step into Princess Peach Toadstool's shoes for a day. Of course, on that day, you'll likely be kidnapped. See, Princess Peach, ruler and crowning glory of the Mushroom Kingdom, has long battled Bowser and his Koopas for the safety of her realm. But she must not have fought very long before Mario and Luigi came, because there is no way she'd survive without them. Occasionally she asserts a little independence, but usually she's the key point in Bowser's latest plan---a plan, that somehow, always involves her being captured. And as if this wasn't enough, as soon as there's even a chance she might be captured, the Mushroom Kingdom absolutely ceases to function. The poor Toads are always completely traumatized by the capture of their dear Princess! Even though it happens, like, every twenty minutes. "Thank you, Mario! But our Princess is in another castle!!!" The story of her life.

NAME: Professor Elvin Gadd
GAME(S):
Luigi's Mansion
INFO:
Professor E. Gadd is an old professor (betcha you didn't know that!) He decides, conveniently enough I suppose, that he's too old to be hunting ghosts, and assigns the task to Luigi, who is looking for his missing bro, Mario, anyway. He also provides Luigi with supplies like the Poltergust 3000 and advice.

NAME: Professor Kolorado
GAME(S):
Paper Mario
INFO:
Kolorado Koopa, a good Koopa Troopa with a nose for treasure, is a famous archaeologist from Koopa Village, always out on expeditions. He's also a bag of hot air. He takes credit for a bunch of Mario's deeds, and endangers everyone's lives with his 'treasure-hunting'. But all of that doesn't hurt my love for him one bit. He is positively one of my favorite characters in PM, just cuz he's so hilarious. He does take a stab at fighting Lava Pirahna, and he refers to a Star Spirit as 'a great blooming starfish'. ^____^

NAME: Punchinello
GAME(S):
Super Mario RPG
INFO:
Punchinello could use some therapy. He...well, he's a boss, one of Smithy's henchmen, in Moleville Mines. He has an army of Bob-ombs of various sizes at his command, and he rants about how no one appreciates him. Punchy then decides that the only cure for his anguish is destroying Mario. Well, unfortunately for his dreams of fame, Punchinello gets a little overzealous and gets crushed under his own bomb. Your reward is finding Dyna, Mite, and a Star Piece, too.
NAME: Queen Nimbus
GAME(S):
Super Mario RPG
INFO:
Female counterpart to King Nimbus, naturally, Queen of Nimbus Land and Mallow's mother. She worries about her son (who was long-lost for a while anyway) now that he's returned. Other than that, she mostly tries to calm down the King when he goes nuts over 'celebs' like Mario and Bowser.
NAME: Raini
GAME(S):
Super Mario RPG
INFO:
Raini is a normal citizen of the Mushroom Kingdom, with dreams of romance. Over the course of the game, she and her love, Raz, get engaged, get married in Marrymore (which gets interrupted by Booster), and end up honeymooning on Yo'ster Isle. True Love prevails!

NAME: Raphael the Raven
GAME(S):
Yoshi's Island, Paper Mario
INFO:
Raphael is an odd case. Ordinarily I would just list him like he was: the end boss, an angry giant raven, of World 5 in Yoshi's Island. Fought on some sort of moon, when defeated, Raphael floated off and became a constellation. End of story? Evidently not, because in Paper Mario, not only is he back, but he's good! He and his ravens are the masters of Lavalava Island and Jade Jungle, and hold the key to the volcano. Raphael cheerfully offers Mario help, but when telling his ravens what to do, you can still see a little of his old, boss-temper on him. ^^

NAME: Raz
GAME(S):
Super Mario RPG
INFO:
Raz is also a normal Mushroom person just trying to get on with his love life. He and fiance Raini get married (despite Booster throwing them out of the chapel for HIS wedding) and go on to live happily ever after.

NAME: Rex
GAME(S):
Super Mario World
INFO:
Rex is a simple, dinosaur enemy found only in Dinosaur Land, logically enough. A few jumps on the head will take care of this enemy.

NAME: Reznor
GAME(S):
Super Mario World
INFO:
Reznor, according to the story, used to be a normal dinosaur of Dinosaur Land until Bowser took over, and hypnotized them to be on his evil side. Now, these fiendish mini-bosses control the Fortresses around the land. At least there aren't as many Fortresses as there was in Super Mario Bros. 3! ^_^

NAME: Rip Cheato
GAME(S):
Paper Mario
INFO:
This guy's a tricky one. (Like the similarly named Chet Rippo, he is pretty much a 'thing'). Rip lives in the deepest parts of Toad Town sewers, offering a steady price of 64 coins for his goods. You can't tell what they are until you buy them. Unlike Chet, Rip isn't really ripping you off blatantly. Some of the things you can buy are worthwhile, even if a few are a bit overpriced. You can't tell till you buy, so buyer beware! ^^

NAME: Rip Van Fish
GAME(S):
Super Mario World
INFO:
These underwater enemies seem innocent enough---slumbering peacefully. That is, until Mario or Luigi come close enough, then they wake up and give frantic chase. Good thing they're just fish.

NAME: Roy Koopa
GAME(S):
Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Safari, Mario is Missing
INFO:
Great minds think alike? Well, twin minds do, I guess. Roy, Morton's twin and another kid of Bowser's, haunts the same World number like Morton. Roy's always in W-5, at least where SMB3 and SMW are concerned. Roy is the boss of Sky Land in SMB3 and the Forest of Illusion in SMW. He wears shades.
NAME: Salvo the Slime
GAME(S):
Yoshi's Island
INFO:
The boss of World 1, Salvo is, well, a giant drop of slime. He is easily deteriorated with some shots of eggs, or even pieces of himself. Other varieties are fought to obtain keys later in Tap-Tap's Fort.

NAME: Sergeant Flutter
GAME(S):
Super Mario RPG
INFO:
Sergeant Flutter is a straight-forward, no-nonsense military leader of Koopa Paratroopas. Fortunately for Mario, he's one of the first to reform to good, serving under Monster Mama of Monstro Town, town of reformed monsters. He and his troops assist Mario in scaling the cliffs at Land's End.

NAME: Shell Creepers
GAME(S):
Mario Bros.
INFO:
The earliest form of Koopa Troopas, before they were called that. Shell Creepers were turtles that Mario and Luigi cleared from the sewers in one of their earliest adventures.

NAME: Shy Away
GAME(S):
Super Mario RPG
INFO:
Face it, without this annoying flying Shy Guy, who really should've gone off and been a botanist instead of bothering Mario, the Megasmilax would just be a regular plant. Shy Away has a habit of nurturing and watering man-eating plants, which tends to get in your way. But on the other hand, he gives you something that aids you in getting Mario's best weapon, the Lazy Shell!

NAME: Shy Guy
GAME(S):
Super Mario Bros. 2, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario, Mario Party, 2, 3, Mario Tennis, Golf, Luigi's Mansion
INFO:
Shy Guys, originally, were merely masked groundling enemies, shrouded in a bit of mystery, that roamed Sub-Con in SMB2. Eventually, their roles and varieties have expanded greatly, especially in YI, where they donned stilts and flames and flowers to try and get Yoshi. Some kinds fly (like Shy Away), some like Shysters ride pogo sticks, etc. Shy Guys, essentially, like to cause trouble. In SMRPG, they party all night after taking over the Mushroom Kingdom with Mack, and in PM, they run amok in Toad Town, stealing everyone's precious items. Notable ones include Game Guy, Gourmet Guy, and General Guy.

NAME: Skolar
GAME(S):
Paper Mario
INFO:
Another Star Spirit from Star Haven, held captive by Bowser. I believe this is the one that escapes, only to be caught by the Boos and held for ransom. Reeeal smart, there, Skolar.

NAME: Sluggy the Unshaven
GAME(S):
Yoshi's Island
INFO:
Sluggy is a digusting piece of boot-fodder whose only weakness is his heart, which seems to be suspended in his jello-like body. His fortress, halfway through World 5, is more of a pain to navigate than the end boss of the world!

NAME: Smithy
GAME(S):
Super Mario RPG
INFO:
Smithy is a pretty potent evil. He has to be if he can kick Bowser out of his own castle, forcing him to join forces with Mario! Smithy desires to fill the world with weapons, and comes from some unknown world. He stays in his Factory beyond the vortex in Bowser's Keep, forging more awful weapon bosses like Bowyer, Mack, Yaridovich and the like. He's the final boss, and...he has a lot of heads, frankly. ^^;

NAME: Snifit
GAME(S):
Super Mario Bros. 2, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario RPG
INFO:
Snifits are reminiscent of Shy Guys (they have the whole mask and cloak scheme going on) but they fire Bullet Bills out their mouths. Really, that has to hurt them, you'd think. These enemies aren't encountered very often, but when they are, watch out! Oh yeah, in SMRPG, the three Snifits work as Booster's assistants, and they're absolutely hilarious. ^_^

NAME: Spiny
GAME(S):
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario
INFO:
Spinies are annoying groundling troops in Bowser's army, but thankfully, they tend not to show up without a Lakitu dishing them out. They are generally a Lakitu's ammo, and crawl around after hitting the ground, making walking a chore for Mario and Luigi.

NAME: Stanley
GAME(S):
Donkey Kong 3
INFO:
This guy is somewhat of an enigma, picking up where Mario left off where DK is concerned. Known as Stanley the Bugman, he appears to be an exterminator. Why he's after DK, I do not know.

NAME: Sumo Brother
GAME(S):
Super Mario World
INFO:
These guys, obviously rather fat, are seen mostly in the Twin Bridges, possibly Chocolate Island areas of Dinosaur Land. When they stomp, lightning strikes, igniting the ground below them. Run!

NAME: Super Blooper
GAME(S):
Paper Mario
INFO:
The last of the Blooper bosses fought in Toad Town Tunnels, this one has the capability to not only charge up its attack power, but....give birth to babies in battle?! Kill it while you can. ^^

NAME: Sushie
GAME(S):
Paper Mario
INFO:
This Cheep-Cheep is a nanny to the Yoshi kids in Yoshi Village, specifically the Fearsome Five. She joins Mario so she can find them when they get lost in the jungle, but joins permanently after she finds out he is trying to save Princess Peach---something she finds extremely romantic. She enjoys things like romance novels.
NAME: Tap-Tap the Red-Nose
GAME(S):
Yoshi's Island
INFO:
This kind of creature, those tap-tap things (named by the sound they make when walking, combined with the red nose, see) only appears on Yoshi's Island. They can't be eaten by Yoshi. And this one, specifically, is a giant halfway boss in World 6, the last world in the game. To be beaten, it must be knocked in the lava.

NAME: Tatanga
GAME(S):
Super Mario Land
INFO:
Tatanga, the Space-Conqueror, invaded the peaceful Sarasaland and kidnapped its Princess, Daisy, to be his bride. Enter, of course, Mario, who had a thing or two to say in protest. Once Tatanga was defeated once, he hasn't ever shown up again, and Daisy has moved on to bigger things than the fate of Sarasaland...like Golf, and Tennis. ^_~

NAME: Thwimp
GAME(S):
Super Mario World
INFO:
Thwimps are basically tiny versions of Thwomps, found in some castles and fortresses.

NAME: Thwomp
GAME(S):
Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario 64, Mario Party, 2, 3
INFO:
These huge hunks of stone enjoy coming down on anything beneath them, particularly Mario and Luigi. They can also make the way through a road impassable, as players of the MP games and Kart found out. The only way one has ever been defeated is in SMB3, if one is lucky enough to have a Hammer Suit.

NAME: Toad
GAME(S):
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario 64, Paper Mario, Mario Party, 2, 3, Mario Tennis, Golf, Luigi's Mansion, Wario's Woods
INFO:
Toad, good friend of Princess Peach, is one of the seven Mushroom Retainers, and always on the fringe of trouble. But he's never short of advice and always willing to pitch in. Most often, as in SMB3, SMRPG, and LM, etc, he plays the advice-giver, helper, save-game type of guy, but occasionally, Toad gets his own chance to shine, like in SMB2, SMK, and WW, where he is playable. Toad's pretty cool, indeedy. ^^

NAME: Toadies
GAME(S):
Yoshi's Island
INFO:
Kamek's little henchmen, that look like mini-Magikoopas that got crossbred with toy helicopters. All they do is, when the timer runs out on Baby Mario (as in, when Yoshi gets hit), they swoop in and capture him. So, seeing them is not a good sign.

NAME: Toadofsky
GAME(S):
Super Mario RPG
INFO:
Toadofsky is an eccentric composer living in Tadpole Pond, specifically, Melody Bay. (Would a composer live anywhere else? Of course not.) By correctly using tadpoles to compose the melodies he wants, Mario can gain more access to the membership-only-juice bar in Tadpole Pond.

NAME: Topper, Dr.
GAME(S):
Super Mario RPG
INFO:
It's hard to tell who I like more, Chuck Quizmo or this guy. But Dr. Topper, the Quizmaster, as he calls himself, makes getting through Bowser's Keep a chore of the mind as well as battle skills. He's a Hammer Brother, but he obviously prefers testing Mario's memory with his quizzes and mind games.

NAME: Triclyde
GAME(S):
Super Mario Bros. 2
INFO:
Another minion of the evil Wart, guarding at least two different worlds if I recall. Snake-y!

NAME: Tubba Blubba
GAME(S):
Paper Mario
INFO:
Tubba Blubba, once thought to be invincible by both the good and the bad, was the terror of Gusty Gulch. You see, Tubba's favorite food was ghosts, and he was actually eating all the Boos. Their leader, Bow, finally decided to take action and held the Star Spirit Skolar for ransom until Mario defeated Tubba, rationalizing, "Well, you'd have had to fight him anyway." Tubba's invincibility, it turns out, was because his heart was separate from his body, locked in a windmill near Gusty Gulch. Discovering this weakness, Mario defeated the so-called 'Invincible Tubba Blubba'...much to Bowser's dismay.

NAME: Tumble
GAME(S):
Mario Party 3
INFO:
Tumble is a dice, (or die, for you grammar freaks ^_~) come to life, who guides Mario and friends around the boards of MP3. Frankly, I liked Toad's help better, but that's just me. ^^

NAME: Tutankoopa
GAME(S):
Paper Mario
INFO:
The boss of Dry Dry Ruins, holding Star Spirit Mamar hostage, Tutankoopa first tries to scare Mario away using a spooky voice. When that doesn't work, he relies on his magic, and very un-chained Chomps. However, it turns out the Chomps don't like Tutankoopa very much...

NAME: Twink
GAME(S):
Paper Mario
INFO:
Twink, a Star Kid, was the last to rise from Starborn Valley to Star Haven before Bowser stole the Star Rod. Now, though he lacks the power of a full star, he aided Princess Peach in every way possible. He kept her company in captivity, and whenever they found something useful, he relayed the message to Mario. Later on, he even gets to give Kammy Koopa a little beating. ^^
NAME: Valentina
GAME(S):
Super Mario RPG
INFO:
Valentina is a citizen of Nimbus Land, but unlike the rest of the pudgy, cloudy lot, she has a supermodel figure and an evil mind to boot. Ambitious in her evil plans, she locks away the King and Queen, and actually gets the people of Nimbus Land to believe that her disgruntled bird assistant, Dodo, is Prince Mallow. She's really full of herself, and when Mario and Mallow teach her a lesson, she deserves it. In a final twist, she escapes from Nimbus Land with Dodo, and ends up....marrying Booster!!!
NAME: Waluigi
GAME(S):
Mario Tennis
INFO:
Waluigi, the newly-introduced rival for Luigi (and I'm assuming he's also Wario's brother), is as, well, no-good as Wario himself. He's thin and lanky like Luigi, and well, all we've seen him do villain-wise is play tennis, so if he does anything else, I'll tell ya. ^^

NAME: Wario
GAME(S):
Wario Land, Wario Land 2, Wario Land 3, Wario Land 4, Mario Party, 2, 3, Mario Tennis, Wario's Woods, Mario Kart 64
INFO:
Wario is kind of like the evil version of Mario. Supposedly, as children, Mario took things away from Wario, and made him miserable (somehow I don't have trouble believing this, look at Luigi for instance ^^) and Wario became bitter and swore revenge. He took over Mario's Castle, and then went on to his own treasure-grabbing adventures. He has faced off against Captain Syrup when she stole his treasure, as well as other things. He's pretty much selfish as they come.

NAME: Wart
GAME(S):
Super Mario Bros. 2
INFO:
In a distress message received in a dream, Mario learned from the captives fairies that the evil Wart had taken over Sub-Con, the land of dreams. So, Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad went off on a quest to save this strange land. Wart is basically a big frog, and above all else, he hates vegetables. So naturally, what you'd use against him would be...well, you figure it out. ^_^

NAME: Watt
GAME(S):
Paper Mario
INFO:
Watt, the child of a Li'l Sparky (I'm not sure what that is at the moment, but anyway, Watt's a lighty-thing) was trapped in the lantern of the Big Lantern Ghost in Shy Guy's Toybox until Mario saved him. I'm not actually sure if Watt is male or female, but it really doesn't matter....Watt lights things up! And s/he also makes hidden treasure chests visible, which is also nice.

NAME: Wendy O. Koopa
GAME(S):
Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Safari, Mario is Missing
INFO:
The only female out of Bowser's seven Koopa Kids, Wendy seems to put up with her brothers just fine. She wears a big bow, and jewelry and all that. She is the boss of Water Land in SMB3 and Chocolate Island in SMW.

NAME: Whomp
GAME(S):
Super Mario 64, Mario Party, Mario Party 2, Mario Party 3
INFO:
Whomp, a relative of Thwomp, perhaps, is another massive stone block whose goal in life is to squash Mario. They're more mobile than Thwomps, however, and have a weak point. But they block roads just as well...

NAME: Wiggler
GAME(S):
Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario 64
INFO:
Wiggler is an idyllic, peaceful, happy worm, yellow with polka-dots and a little flower hat, that ambles along in the forest or wherever it might be. Until one steps on it. Then it becomes a raging, red, not happy at all worm that runs homicidally after its prey! At least it has some contrast. ^_~

NAME: Wise Wisterwood
GAME(S):
Paper Mario
INFO:
This huge, old tree is not only wise, as his name suggests, but his mouth is the gateway between Flower Fields and Toad Town. He watches over all in Flower Fields.
NAME: Yaridovich
GAME(S):
Super Mario RPG
INFO:
Yaridovich is one of Smithy's henchmen, having used a disguise as many Mushroom people to take over Seaside Town. (Locking all the town's real inhabitants up helped, too). Posing as the elder, he requests that Mario bring him the Star Piece from the sea. Once Mario returns, Yarid reveals himself, steals the Star Piece, which Mario just won from Johnny Jones, and splits to the coast. Unfortunately for him, the Blade is late, and before he can escape, Johnny and Mario confront him and defeat the cretin.

NAME: Yoshi
GAME(S):
Yoshi, Yoshi's Cookie, Yoshi's Safari, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Story, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario RPG, Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64, Paper Mario, Mario Party, 2, 3 Tennis, Golf
INFO:
Yoshies are bundles of cuteness! Actually, they're very hungry dinos, but who can tell the difference? Yoshi first served as transportation for Mario and Luigi, but has since moved on to his own adventures. Actually, as the prequel Yoshi's Island explains, the Mario Bros. owe their lives to Yoshi, who helped save them both from Kamek's treachery when they were but infants. Anyway, Yoshies are very, very, cool. And there's almost nothing they can't eat! ^^
NAME: Zombone
GAME(S):
Super Mario RPG
INFO:
This is the second, and pretty much undead, form of the Czar Dragon of Barrel Volcano. And, unsurprisingly, it still doesn't like Mario. ^^
