Curaçao Curaçao is an island in the Netherlands Antilles. Located just 35 miles away from Venezuela, this is truly one of the most precious gems of the Caribbean. This is an island that is full of culture and hospitality. I enjoyed three wonderful weeks in Curaçao about 1 1/2 years ago. I was captivated by the island's sights, sounds, history, and people. I took many pictures of the island but of course, I can't show all of them, so I have placed a few of them that I somehow managed to get scanned on campus (which was not easy). So if you want more than that, you'll just have to go there for yourself (which I hope you will). I took the following pictures in late '95 and early '96. The capital of Curaçao is Willemstad. The town is divided into two parts: Otrabanda and Punda. This bridge allows one to travel between the sides. This bridge is so old (but safe) that the government does not allow any vehicles on the bridge because they want to preserve the bridge as it is a historical landmark in the island. When the bridge is opened to let ships pass, people use the ferry to get from one side of town to the other side of town. I was on a ferry when I took this picture. Notice the buildings on the other side of the water. The influence of Holland on the island is evident by looking at this Dutch architecture. I pulled one of my crazy stunts again. I was on the roof of a hotel by some government buildings.
