One more fact about that famous bridge. If you notice, the bridge (not at top) is to the left of the ship. It is black and white. The thing that is unique about this is that the bridge opens and closes horizontally and not virtically like most bridges. Neat--huh?
Landhuis is the dutch word for mansion. The picture above shows one of the forty former plantation houses on the island today. These were the houses of the slave masters. The government makes every effort to preserve these remnants of a dark period in history (slavery). All of the furniture in these houses are from that same period. People now live in these houses and take care them. In addition, they give tours to tourists.
This is where the slaves lived. What a contrast to where the masters lived.
This is at the bottom of the house where the slaves used to be beaten. The words in dutch on the right basically say something like this: Don't care what everybody is saying but do the right thing.
