Located just a few hours north of Dakar, Saint Louis is an old colonial town that was the capital of Senegal for many years. It was the first French settlement in Africa. It is a nice change from the crowds and noise of Dakar. It also serves as a base to many wild life reserves such as the Parc National des Oiseaux du Djoudi, a magnet for bird-watchers like moi. :)
We took a taxi to Saint Louis and got there a little late since the car broke down twice. The first time, we got a push from two police officers. The second time, we had to pull over and wait for some men in a garage (or whatever that was called) to fix the car (almost an hr). Lawd, that was an experience for we were close to the Sahara, and it was incredibly hot. Many of the taxis are in terrible condition and should have no business on the road; however, because of the corruption, the drivers can get documents stating that the car passed the emission test. Thus, when using cabs or other types of public transportation here, some patience is needed.
