Adventure games have always set themselves apart from
other genres since the good old days. Super Metroid is one of the
genre's best. It has
great 16-bit graphics and sound, music that uses the Super Nintendo to
it's highest potential, spot on gameplay, and a great story. Not to
mention the fact that the main character is female without being
exploited, which is rare these days (look at Lara Croft). It pulls you
in and doesn't let you go. The power-ups are well worth the considerable
effort of locating them, and the bosses are well programmed and
challenging. To finish this game is a test of all acquired video game
skills and sleep habits. After many sleepless nights I was able to
defeat this old gem thanks
to ZSNES and caffeine. If you have never played this great tribute to
the 16-bit era then do yourself a favor and do it!
With the new GameBoy Advance heading our way, we get to experience
Metroid all over again. It will be interesting to see if Nintendo can
live up to our expectations. The new Metroid better not be a rehash of
older titles like Super Mario Advance! |
