Club Notes 2004

20th December

The celebrations were continuing in the parishes of Creeslough and Dunfanaghy this week following the historic victory of the St Michael‘s team in the county under-21 final last weekend.

After a rivetting battle against a spirited Glenswilly team, St Michael‘s produced a strong late finale to claim victory on a final score of 1-11 to 1-8.

Lively corner forward, Danny Langan, was the hero for St Michael‘s scoring four late points, two in injury time.

Their win set off wild scenes of celebrations that continued for the best part of the week in the North West Donegal villages. The final was unique in that it was the first time that both teams had appeared in a county ‘A‘ final.

The contest drew a huge crowd of over 2,000 people to the O‘Donnell Park venue. Such was the huge interest in the game that the throw-in was delayed for 15 minutes to allow for the crowd to filter into the venue.

Despite being in control for most of the first half Glenswilly found themselves 1-4 to 0-2 behind at half-time.

Shaun Stewart bagged the St Michael‘s first half goal and also added two points from play during the first period. However, Glenswilly, roared on by their vocal supporters made a real game of it in the second period.

A goal from Colin Kelly after 45 minutes tied the game and when he followed up with a point minutes later it looked as if the cup was on it way to ‘the Glen‘. Finish However, when the chips were down and the stakes in the melting pot it was St Michael‘s who finished with a late flurry.

Best for the winners were Danny Langan, Colm Anthony McFadden and Gerard Gallagher. For Glenswilly it was a learning curve and a great achievement nonetheless considering they had won the ‘B‘ competition just last year. If the squad can stay together- only three are over-age next year- they will be a force to be reckoned with again.

‘People have been saying its been a long time coming. It certainly has, but that makes it all the more sweeter. The boys stuck together and stuck at it and now they have their rewards.‘ said a delighted St Michael‘s team manager, Colm McFadden.

A dejected Glenswilly manager, Brendan Walsh said his team would come back again. ‘Overall I couldn‘t ask for any more from the lads. They did us proud. While it is terribly disappointing I think it will stand to us and hopefully this team will be around for some time to come.‘ he said.

6th December

Well done to our under 21 team who qualified for the under 21 A final on Sunday after a 2 point victory over Naomh Conail. This will be the club's first ever appearance in an A final at any age group in our 22 year history and great credit must be given to managers, players and all our supporters whom traveled in such large numbers to the burn road on Sunday.
The opening period of the game was all Glenswilly and 3 points were on the board, with points from Bonner (2) and McGinley but it could have been so much more had it not have been for a number of bad wides and Colin Kelly's shot off the crossbar. Glenties hit 3 points of their own and McGinley got the final point of the half leaving it 0-4 to 0-3 at the break.
The second half was again tight with a number of cards been handed out to both teams, but it was down to our younger players that really rose to the occasion with 4 points scored between Gary McFadden and Caolan Kelly with also Shaun Burke and Joe Gibons standing out in defence . Then with the game entering injury time Colin Kelly hit over a super left footed point to leave 3 points between the teams, the Glenties men may have got the final point but it was to little too late as we held on for a memorable victory.

The under 21 team had a great victory over Killybegs at Ardara on Saturday, the Glen playing with the wind in their backs hit 5 unanswered points, before Killybegs registered their only score of the half after 16 minutes another Glen point followed before Ciaran Bonner toe poked the ball into the Killybegs net after good work from Darren McGinley, leaving the half time score 1-8 to 0-1.

Killybegs came out all fired up for the start of the second half however the Glen defence were magnificent with their hounding down in packs of the Killybegs team, which allowed the forwards to open up with birthday boy Colin 'shaggy' Kelly in sparkling form. Bonner got his second goal after 47 minutes following a penalty, which was saved by the goalkeeper, but from the rebound he made no mistake. With the Glen now cruising to victory super sub Rory Gill finished off the scoring with another goal.

Well done to the senior team that beat Bundoran on Sunday to secure a place in Division 1B for next year and finishing 5th in the section. The team got off to the perfect start leading by 2pt to 1pt when a high ball into the Bundoran defence was fisted in the net by Gerard McGrenra for an unbelievable goal, more points followed and we 1-6 to 0-2 ahead as the final stages of the first half came to a close when Joe Devine got his first score of the year however unfortunately for him and the glen into his own net, the old warrior still had a super game in the corner apart.
