Self-Consciousness Has Purpose(Granger): Man is a creature of self-consciousness. He says, "I know that I know, therefore I must exist." I know that I know! Who is the "I" in this statement, that does the knowing? The I is of interest, and has been the source of much disagreement in the earth. Since the days of Sigmund Freud, many have discussed this I, and tried to pin the tail on the donkey. Charles Darwin identified the source of man in scientific and physical terms. His Origin of Species was destined to revolutionize man's concept of himself. His evolutionary doctrine made man a part of nature ...an animal along with other animals. Comment: [The original quotation of, I know that I know..., was from René Descartes, the French philosopher (1596-1650), from his fourth Meditation, "I think, therefore I am." The year following publication of Darwin's, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, in 1859, Gustav Fechner established psychology as a science. Sigmund Freud was four years old. By the 1920's Freud's psychoanalysis was all the rage.] (Granger:) Freud threw the academic world into a spin with his Id and Ego. We have watched many come and go since that time. In this endeavour of defining man, the area we need to set straight, so we believe, is that concerning the source of man as a psychic being. Without the acceptance of man as a psychic as well as a physical being, science is never going to get off the starting plate. There is no point in saying that if I cannot see, feel, measure, identify, and experiment with under controlled conditions, then I will not accept that as reality or existence. This form of thinking is, thank heaven ...or someone, is on its way out of the mind of science. We are going to explain, to the best of our ability, the purpose of man in the earth. We are all (your place and mine) in existence for a purpose. The purpose, in so far as we can trace through the levels of consciousness, resides in each High-soul. This soul of each man or woman is his or her source of psychic consciousness. The psychic nature of each man or woman descends from the soul as a personality, and lives in a physical body on the earth during his/her physical lifespan. The High-soul has a purpose and a self-awareness; it too knows that: I am here, and therefore I exist. It knows that at a very high level of awareness indeed. We are at liberty to tell something of the awareness and nature of the soul; however, do not take our little narrative to be a complete description of the soul (the High-soul). It is so very complex that we find the task of describing that which we do understand to be very difficult. The problem here is that there are no thought-images from the earth-side that we can use as raw material to develop and send back. The High-soul is a psychic creation, or a spiritual creation if you wish; we are using the word "psychic" to describe spiritual consciousness in any structured, conscious form. It (the soul) remembers its source of consciousness, out of which it comes, and to which it sends data from its experience. This is a vital, living, aware scene of activity going on without ceasing, far above the human mind. We are aware of this activity, but we do not participate in it directly. There is a scene of activity, above that of the soul again; it is so far beyond us that we have no thought-patterns or words to describe. But the scene from here is impressive indeed. The expression "the glory of the heavens" is indeed justified. We are not a very religious group here, I suppose, but we do admire the beauty of this high scene of heavenly activity. But now we must come back closer to old Mother Earth, with all her aches and pains. The soul's activity is contained in the need to expand; to gain knowledge and awareness; to create consciousness in various forms, old and new. There are no specific limits, so far as we know, given to a soul in its areas of growth and activity. Certainly the soul has within its nature a great range of freedom within which to explore, to create, to develop, to grow. It is in no way limited to a single lifetime on earth; there are many lifetimes on earth contained within the experience of any High-soul. A soul is a very old structure of course, very old indeed. In terms of physical life it would be billions of years of earth history. Psychic age is difficult to explain. God Consciousness always existed. That concept is difficult for the human mind on earth to cope with. We understand better over here this idea of no beginning. Time is nothing more or less than an arrangement or pattern of events. Remove all the events and effort out of time and what is left? Nothing but a void. You see, time is an idea only; it is not something you can truly measure in its own right. I know that time is measured on earth ...dear God, how it is measured. Time without end, it is measured! But in psychic terms this form of clock-time has no meaning. It is not a psychic thing like a thought that exists in its own right. No matter how many years a person spends on earth, it is worth the total sum of ZERO over here, unless he or she has put some effort into being alive while on earth. One hundred years of living on earth is worth nothing in itself. Not one little bit of value is contained in a hundred years of life on earth. Nothing! Zero! The only value anyone gets out of a life on earth is the material (psychic or spiritual) from effort, from thinking, from acting, from learning, from trying. It makes little or no difference if you win or lose in physical terms, what counts is the effort ...just that and nothing more. Why do medical science and society put such effort into trying to prolong life, while placing such little emphasis on the need for effort? What will they have accomplished, to send over here a "one hundred year old zombie" who has made no effort to cope with life; made no effort to acquire material from the struggle, and has nothing from which to start his or her life on this side? Better, believe me, had that person lived ten years and put some real effort into those ten precious years of life on earth. This concept of "time" as used on earth is not a thing in itself. It is of no value in itself. Time is a spook on this side; we cannot see it, or measure it, or use it. Struggle with ideas, they are as money in the bank. But forget about hanging on to time for its own sake; it is worth as much or as little as what you do with it. |
