WHAT WE DID!
SATURDAY
Saturday we enjoyed the hotel's continental breakfast, and Terry and Ellie
joined us from Toledo. We then all went to Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield
Village, which was great!!
It was the Ford Racing Centennial weekend, so
there were lots of vintage racing cars displayed there and the place was
packed with racing celebrities and fans! They were handing out free posters
and Hot Wheels racing cars, which was very cool!! The weather was cloudy but
warm, with a little rain now and then but nothing major. Some of us toured
the Village, others went to IMAX theater to see the very well-done 'Mysteries
of Egypt'.
At lunchtime we dined at the historic Eagle Tavern, built in 1831 by Clinton
Wood and used as a popular stagecoach stop in the 1850's. After spending some
time in the period taproom, where we had fun explaining why were all wearing
matching T-shirts to the period barkeep! :) Lunch in the 1850s-style dining
room was wonderful, then it was off for a group picture in front of Martha
Mary Chapel. Then we went back for more tours of the village and museum, and
of course the gift shop!! :)
One of the buildings we visited was Mrs. Cohen's millinery, a shop dating
from the 1880s. The presenter working there knew the show and asked us about
our shirts, which was very cool!! We tried on some of the hats on display
and did quite a bit of 'vogueing'! :)
Our Saturday dinner was at Benihana's, a Japanese restaurant where they cook
your meal at your table. They seated all ten of us at one table, which was a
LOT of fun!! We were in a back room with just one other table in the room, so
it was sort of like we had a private room!!
Dinner was an absolute blast, the food was wonderful, and our chef, Bau, was fantastic-it was amazing the way he sliced, diced and flipped his knives around! He was very adept at flipping pieces of unused food into the top of his tall chef's hat. We toasted Judy, who couldn't make it, and Michelle who also was absent due to the birth of her new granddaughter, Cat and Amy for being such great organizers, and all
of our fellow fans gathering around the globe!! We gave him a hearty round of
applause, and both he and Tim, our server, got one of Sarah's flag buttons.
Back at the viewing room, we gave out the goody bags which went over quite
well-everyone loved the video and soundtrack CDs and the Global Gathering
zines were a big hit too!! Vickie made some very cool friendship bracelets
in dark blue, white or baby blue-and-white cording, and everyone received two
of those. Everyone also received a copy of the Time-Life Old West series book
'The Gunfighters' as their special Door Prize. Ellie and Terry passed out
some beautiful pins they bought out West and some lovely Christmas ornaments
that Ellie made for everyone.
We received Portland's box, and Terry won their Door Prize-a beautiful pair
of spurs! Portland's box also included these really cute stuffed lobsters for
our goody bags, as well as two beautiful Portland mugs-thanks, Nancy!!!
We also celebrated Jeanine's birthday and Terry and Ellie's 25th wedding
anniversary, then it was on to some raucous video viewing. We had to be out
of the viewing room by midnight because a church group was using the room in
the morning, so everything had to be taken down. And let me tell you,
folks - with everyone helping, we had that room stripped of everything in about
ten minutes!! It was pretty amazing - sad to see it all come down, though!!
We moved the viewing upstairs, and kept rolling until 1:30 am!!!
