Randolph Magnet School

School/Community Profile

Randolph Magnet School is located on the southwest side of Chicago (7300 South and 2100 West). The neighborhood is predominately African-American with low to middle income families residing in single family homes. Located in the West Englewood area of Chicago, Randolph Magnet School opened in the fall of 1980, and was built to accommodate 900 students. The current enrollment of Randolph is 993, Pre-K through 6th grade students. Our poverty level is 91.2 % as evidenced by the State School Report Card.

The faculty is a stable, racially balanced, extremely talented mixture of young and tenured teachers bringing a wealth of expertise to the students. 47% of the professional staff have masters degrees and above. There are 3 administrators, 56 teachers and 24 educational support staff and 6 school support staff members.

Over the past three years there has been a tremendous increase in parental involvement. The service that is provided to our school by parent volunteers in various capacities far exceeds our expectations. A uniform dress code was implemented in the 1992-93 school year and continues to promote pride, unity, dignity and helps to develop character and self-esteem. Our 1997-1998 goal to create two prototype classrooms paves the way for our school to get on board the Information Superhighway!

Currently Randolph has been a participant in the GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) program. GLOBE is one of the nation’s outstanding environmental education programs, Randolph students started sending data on the Internet in the fall of 1995. Our students, together with 6000 schools in 74 nations, (Cyprus became the 74th GLOBE country on November 24, 1998) share scientific data about our planet via the Internet. We have an automated roof top weather station. (Thanks to a partnership with Best Buy and WBBM-TV) Scientists use GLOBE data in their research and provide feedback to the students to enrich their science education. Images created from the student sets are posted on the World Wide Web, allowing students and visitors at the GLOBE web site to visualize the student environmental observations. . Randolph students have sent over 2 thousand measurements to the GLOBE data base since joining the program.
