The grunge rock band Everclear was formed in Portland, Ore., in 1992 by ex-Colorfinger member Art Alexakis (guitar/vocals), bassist Craig Montoya and drummer Scott Cuthbert. The trio released their debut EP, World of Noise, on the independent Fire Records label in 1993, after which Cuthbert was replaced by Greg Eklund. Following an extensive U.S. tour Everclear signed to Capitol Records, which released the group's second album, Sparkle in Fade, in 1995. Thanks to hit singles like "Santa Monica" and "Heroin Girl" the record was a success, and Alexakis became one of the most visible alternative rock frontmen since Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, launching a solo tour and making frequent media appearances.
