Henderson Cup Finals

Game One

Grinders 16, Tards 3

The 2001 Henderson Cup Finals opened with a bang, as Fernando Tatis rocketed
2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Morgen Grinders (MOR) destroyed the Avery
Tards (AVC) by a score of 16 to 3 at Busch Stadium.

The Tards fans didn't appreciate the big day Tatis had. He popped a two-run
clout over the fence in the 1st inning, blasted a two-run home run (his 2nd
of the season) in the 4th inning and delivered a single in the 6th inning.
Morgen Grinders kept the scorekeepers busy in the 1st inning with 6 runs on
5 hits and the 4th inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 5 hits. The
Grinders dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different innings.

Carl Pavano(1-0) got the win allowing 3 runs in 8 innings. The loss was
charged to Tom Glavine(0-1). He served up 3 gopher balls in 1 and 2/3
innings.

Finals at one game a piece.

The Tards jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring 4 runners

allowed just 3 hits in 7 innings of work. The Tards ended up with 10 hits for
the game while Grinders had 5.

Glendon Rusch(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 1/3 of an inning and

Game Three

Grinders 5, Tards 3

Second baseman Fernando Vina had 4 hits as the Morgen Grinders (MOR) defeated
the Avery Tards (AVC) by the score of 5 to 3 at Safeco Field, to take a 2
games to 1 lead in the Henderson Cup Finals.

In the 5th inning the Grinders scored 4 runs when they had 4 base hits. The
highlight belonged to Jim Edmonds who excited the crowd when he deposited a
big fly over the fence for three runs (his 2nd of the season). The Grinders
took care of Tards with no trouble in the 9th.

Matt Herges(3-0) went 5 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Herges got
relief help from Mike Remlinger who gained credit for his 1st save. Greg
Maddux(2-1) was the loser. He got hit hard, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 5
innings.

'I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought it
was nothing.' Herges said. I was lucky I got a win because I couldn't put
the ball where I wanted it.'

Game Five

Grinders 3, Tards 2

Simply put, this epic battle will stand as the greatest Henderson Cup Final
game for many years to come.

Center fielder Jim Edmonds had 2 base hits at Safeco Field as the Morgen
Grinders (MOR) pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Avery Tards (AVC)
in 13 innings by the count of 3 to 2. The win propelled them to a 3 games
to 2 lead in the best of seven series.

With both bullpens fighting fatigue, starters Carl Pavano and Randy Wolf
kept it a 1-0 game through 7 innings. A Michael Tucker homerun leading off
the 9th inning for the Tards kept Avery alive and deadlocked the game at 1
after nine full innings.

A tension packed 4 innings transpired before the Grinders won it in the 13th
inning. Tim Bogar started the inning off right when he drew a walk. Todd
Hundley stepped up to the plate and he delivered a base-hit. After an out
was recorded, Darryl Hamilton came to the plate and was walked intentionally
to load the bases. One out later, Mark McGwire stepped in and he drew a walk
scoring a run. Edmonds stepped into the box and delivered a single giving
the Morgen Grinders the victory as 44,229 happy fans celebrated wildly. Both
teams finished the game with 8 hits.

The win was credited to Steve Sparks(1-1) who went 4 innings of heroic relief
allowing but 1 unearned run. Tom Glavine(0-2) continued his dismal series in
relief and was tagged with the loss.

Game Seven

Tards 4, Grinders 1

In front of the hometown fans at Busch Stadium, the Avery Tards (AVC)
outscored the Morgen Grinders (MOR) 4 to 1, to win their fourth Henderson
Cup championship - their second in three years.

The Tards came up with all the runs they needed in the 5th inning scoring 4
runners on 4 hits. The big moment was provided by J.D. Drew who made the
fans a happy lot when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 3rd of the
postseason). The Tards had just 6 hits for the night.

The victory was credited to Tom Glavine(1-2) who went 5 innings, allowing 1
run. Glavine was helped out by Gabe White who recorded his 3rd save of the
series. Matt Herges(3-1) took the loss. He pitched 4 and 2/3 innings
allowing 3 hits and 2 walks.
