Gravitation is about a boy named Shuichi Shindou [or Shindou Shuichi for all you otakus out there who feel the need to do names the Japanese way] who wants to become a vocalist. He's part of a band called Bad Luck, along with his best fried Hiroshi Nakano [aka Hiro], who plays the bass guitar. They're both very talented, along with their manager Sakano, who's rather on the paranoid/spazz side. Shuichi happens to meet a mysterious man one night when he's walking home--he drops the lyrics to a new song he'd been composing, and the man picks the paper up. "You have zero talent. Give it up." he tells Shuichi, and walks away without another word. Poor Shindou-san is hurt so deeply that he goes into a depression which seems more like writer's block. The next day, Shuichi tells Hiro about the mysterious stranger, and even though Hiro doesn't feel that the man's criticism isn't worth getting depressed over, he sees through the phoney "writer's block" and tells Shuichi to follow his heart. It turns out that the mysterious man from before is actually Yuki Eiri [Eiri Yuki], a famous romance novelist. Before he even knows what's going on, Shuichi finds himself deeply in love with the author, who turns out to be something of a cold-hearted jerk at first. As the story progresses, Shuichi gets closer and closer to Yuki, who begins to open up more and more--and all this is happening as Bad Luck becomes more and more famous. Many problems arise--Yuki's actual fiancee returning to claim his love, problems from his past that cause him to try to escape his relationship with Shuichi, or things like a new member joining or Hiro wanting to quit. But in the end, Gravitation proves that love can conquer all.

The raw, basic storyline is overall very touching and cute. Sometimes I got a little confused because of the slap-happy humor Shuichi added in, but once I saw through the goofiness, I realised that the story was actually rather good. Kinda gives you that fuzzy feeling, y'know? Anyway, though there is a bit of slap-happiness, every anime story needs it, and Gravitation had just about the right amount, though I would have toned Shuichi down a bit. The series has everything--humor, romance, a touch of violence, music, drama, and a lot of issues real people go through when trying to be accepted among those they love. In case you haven't noticed, it's a shounen-ai series, i.e. boys falling in love with boys.

The art for the anime series is wonderful! The hair colors are interesting, though... ^_~ Shuichi has a full head of bright pink hair, and Fujisaki had green, so I guess anything's possible. I liked how the artists drew Hiro and K, as well as Yuki's eyes. I never got tired of Yuki's eyes. I also liked how the opening and ending of the show were done. The animators used pictures from real life--car lights, trees, people, buildings--to make the sequences unique. Nice effects!

The character development was very nice! Everyone stayed in character, even Yuki, who obviously had to grow to love Shuichi. Each had their own little problems to work out and deal with, and they all got the screenplay they needed to do so. You really do fall in love with certain characters--Ryuichi and Shuichi are the most likeable in my opinion. Just about every kind of personality was given to a character all it's own. Voice actors were chosen very carefully!

I'd reccommend Gravitation for anyone who likes yaoi/shounen-ai, kinda like me. ^_^;; It's a loveable story, and the music's awsome. Very catchy. Realistic situations, too, so the story's believable. Art is great, story's great, characters are better than great.
