How to Hunt

The DIFFERENT TYPES of CLUES, and HOW to SOLVE THEM

The clues that will be given to you mostly take the form of a sentence (s) or phrase (s). In such a sentence/phrase there will be an indicator (or clue words) hinting at the type of clue it is, and, most of the time, a second indication of the answer you are to find.

The purpose of setting clues this way - having so-called primary as well as secondary clues - is so that the questions, though meant to be tricky at times (!), remain fair, and have answers that are not only accurate, but can be justified as well.

  1. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE
    e.g. Beckham's son =
Romeo;  Roman god of war = Mars

  2. SOUNDS LIKE
    e.g. G-Mee = Jimmy; Chan Teck = cantik; V-Key = Vicky
Clue words: it is heard, audibly, noisy etc.

  3. BACKWARD

Clue words: back, return, recall etc.

  4. INITIALS
    e.g.

Clue words: first, initially, in the beginning, etc.

  5. CONTAINER
    e.g. Prec
ise tango moves held in a shopping outlet = ISETAN
Clue words: in, within, inside, around, etc.

  6. ANAGRAM
e.g. team = mate = meat = tame; It may strike
    A, B or C out = Cobra
Clue words: mix, make, bad, perhaps, confused etc.

  7. DEFINITION

Like the 'General Knowledge' clue, usually there are no indicators or clue words
    here

PAST PAPERS

One of the best preparations that you can have before a hunt is to go through some past papers that the hunt setter may have set. This way, you get acquainted with his style, his soft spots, as well as any quirks and idiosyncrasies that he might have.

The past papers come with answers, and, as best as we can, are shown in their disparate parts. This is done so as to help you understand how the answers are derived. There's no need to pull your hair if you can't figure them out. Just drop me a line and I'll be glad to explain them to you ;-)

TULIP READING

Tulips are directional maps, deriving its name from its car rally origins. Just as a good map is essential to finding your way around, accurate tulips are imperative towards guiding you along the correct treasure hunt route.

We believe that the mark of a good treasure hunt lies in the challenge posed by well-set questions and clues: and never in finding your way around from badly drawn and inaccurate tulips. As such, we spare no efforts in our recces in ensuring that the distances and tulips are indicated and drawn accurately. To further aid our participants, we also put in additional landmarks, as well as remarks, to assist them in ensuring that they are going along the correct route.

Below is a sample of tulips, taken off a page of an imaginary route. Invariably, you would want to trip (pressing the button on your speedometer) zero at the start of the hunt. Now, the 'Inter' column relates to the interval distance between one tulip and another, while the 'Cum' column relates to the cumulative distance that your car would have covered at that particular juncture of the tulips. It is good practice to trip at every tulip, by the way, as to do so will minimise your margin of error. On the other hand, if you take the cumulative readings solely, your margin of error increases as your cumulative readings increase. So, play it safe and trip at every tulip, okay!

Additional landmarks are clarified in the 'Remarks' column, as are the questions indicated, the latter being so that you know where to be looking for the answers.

T
here is also a Flash programme to help you understand and read the sample tulips better. Only the roads necessary in explaining the tulips are shown, while the rest are truncated to aid in clarification. Also, only two tulips are shown at any one time as you guide your imaginary car along the route. Now, as you go along, where do you think
you should be looking for the answers to questions 1 & 2 (Q1 & Q2), and later on Q3, Q4 & Q5? Well, good luck and have fun!
