Fan Fiction - "Back To Seattle Part 2"

Boston, MA

April 23rd 1993

"Sorry Dr Crane, you're great, your advice is good, your voice is good, but you're just not the radio type." The station manager of WACL took another sup of his cup of coffee. Which Frasier noted by the way, was normal, black coffee.

Just like Dad drinks.

"I could learn!" Frasier answered.

"It takes time," the station manager replied. "And we haven't got time. The owner wants new talent on the air by Monday. 3 days away."

"Oh well," said Frasier. "thank you for your time.

Thanks for nothing, he thought as he left. Since he'd come up with this idea of becoming a radio psychiatrist, things hadn't gone too well.

Frasier remembered back to when he'd told the guys at Cheers his idea. He'd been unsure at first, but they'd all been supportive. Norm and Cliff had thought it would be a good thing to have a celebrity as a friend, Sam had said he wanted Frasier to promote the bar on his show, but the thing that had persuaded him to go ahead with it was from Woody, surprisingly. He'd said that if Frasier had his own show, people would listen in for help and advice and it would save them from having "to go out in the rain for a shrink." Woody had said it all innocently, but the fact that he would help people convinced Frasier this was the right thing to do.

Plus it meant he could get lots of money!

Back to the events since then though, yesterday he and Lilith had reached a settlement. The divorce would be final on May 12th. The day before his father's 61st birthday.

Frederick would split his time between both his parents. He and Lilith were still living together, but that was only because Frasier hadn't got his own place yet. He had the money to do so, yes, but the perfect place hadn't arrived yet.

As opposed to their screaming matches of the previous few weeks, Frasier and Lilith had tried to keep their divorce as "clean" as possible, to avoid any unnecessary hurt for Frederick, but the hurt was still there for Frasier. He loved Lilith, but she had betrayed him in the most awful way she could. He knew deep down there was no hope for a reconciliation, but he picked up a pen and began to write.

Dear Lilith.....

Once the letter was completed, Frasier put it on her dresser.

-----

Frasier walked into Cheers, where his friends were sitting in their usual barstools.

"Hey Fras, how'd it go?" Sam asked.

"Terrible," said Frasier as he sat down. "Give me a Scotch, large."

He began telling Sam the events of the past couple of days, beginning with his settlement with Lilith and ending with the rejection. During the tale, Frasier noticed a man sitting next to him listening.

"Yes?" he enquired. "Does my personal life interest you so much?"

"Actually it does," the man said. "My name is Dan Flynn. I might be able to help you."

"How?" Frasier asked dryly.

"I own a radio station," Dan explained, "in Seattle."

The mention of his hometown made Frasier freeze a bit, but neither Sam nor Dan noticed. "I own a talk radio station called KACL," Dan continued. "We've been looking for someone to replace Gareth Thomas, the popular talk show host who's retiring on May 20th. We've been wondering if a radio shrink is what we needed to fill in his shoes, and we decided to hire one."

"But what brings you to Boston?" asked Frasier.

"I'm here on holiday," said Dan. "But I think you could be who we're looking for."

"That's a good offer," said Frasier, "but I was kinda hoping I could stay in the Boston area. I don't want to be apart from my son and....." He trailed off before saying "my father lives in Seattle and we haven't spoken for ages."

"Well, if you change your mind, I'm staying at the Burrows Hotel. Room 136. If you need to speak to me," Dan said as he paid for his drink and got up.

Once he'd left, Sam said to Frasier, "Are you nuts?"

"What?"

"He's offering you a job like that and you turn it down!"

"I told him, I don't want to leave Boston."

"Frasier, its Seattle. Your home town. Maybe Frederick can go with you." Sam knew where Frasier was born, although not the truth about Niles and Martin.

"I'd have to talk to Lilith about it of course," Frasier said, partly to Sam but partly to himself.

"Frasier, go for it. Take the job," said Cliff, walking over. "You'd be in the second best profession, after the Postal service."

Frasier and Sam tried to hide a smile at that. "I'll think about it," was Frasier's reply as he took another sup of his drink.

-----

Frasier stood at the entrance to the Burrows Hotel. In his 15 years living in Boston, he'd never been in here before. Frasier looked around. Lilith and Frederick were behind him.

"Good luck Daddy," Frederick said to his father. Frasier smiled.

"Thank you," he said to his son. Then he looked at Lilith. When she'd found out, she'd encouraged Frasier to go for it. Frasier wondered at first if she just wanted him out of Boston, but no, Lilith had wanted Frasier to do what he felt was in his interests. She looked back at him.

"Good luck Frasier," she said.

Frasier walked into the lobby. "Hello," he said to the receptionist. "I'm looking for a Mr Daniel Flynn, room 136....."
