Niles and Mel eloped in 2000 a few days before Donny and Daphne's wedding, but the day before that wedding Niles found out Daphne loved him. Niles left Mel for Daphne and she gave him his divorce, on one condition. He had to pretend to be happily married to her for a while, before she would divorce him. This was to save her dignity. Niles eventually stood up to her and they got divorced in late 2000.

Mel has a few things in common with Maris. She can be a bit bossy, and isn't too popular with Frasier or Martin. Like Maris, she can also be dominating and likes to be in control. Unlike Maris though, Mel cared for Niles and was hurt when he left her. She thinks what she's doing is best for Niles, whereas Maris would do what was best for her.

Mel likes to be noticed and is quite concerned about her social status. She was hurt when Niles left her but was also concerned about what other people would think of her. This suggests Mel might be slightly insecure.

She likes operas and parties, which is probably what attracted Niles to her. Mel does not like being lied to, as she dumped Niles after finding out he'd been lying to her at Christmas. They got back together and eventually got married.....
