THE GORDON BATHGATE

ON-LINE EXPERIENCE

"There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call... THE TWILIGHT ZONE."

I have been a life long fan of the Twilight Zone. This page is devoted to the classic fantasy TV programme and includes a biography of it's creator Rod Serling. There is also an episode guide with links to other sites devoted to the sci-fi anthology series.

Rod Serling - A Brief Biography

Rod Serling was born in Syracuse, New York, on December 25, 1924, and grew up in Binghamton, the son of a wholesale meat dealer. By his own account, he had no early literary ambitions, though from an early age, he and his older brother, Robert, immersed themselves in movies and in shows like Astounding Stories and Weird Tales.

Serling enlisted in the U.S. Army 11th Airborne Division paratroopers on the day he graduated from high school. After basic training he was sent into combat in the Philippines and was wounded by shrapnel. After the war, Serling enrolled at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. In 1949, whilst studying Language and Literature, Serling sold his first television script.

After graduation, Serling and his wife Carolyn moved to Cincinnati where he became a staff writer for WLW radio. His duties there involved writing dialogue for a folk duo and false testimonials for a patent medicine remedy. He soon moved to television and from 1951 to 1955, more than seventy of his television scripts were produced. During his first year freelancing, he earned just under $5,000 selling scripts to various anthology shows.

Serling was awarded he first of six Emmy awards in 1955 with the production of "Patterns." This brilliant play dramatised power struggles at the top of a major corporation. "Patterns" was simple, direct and tremendously powerful and the reaction to it was overwhelming. A year later the film version was released and he proceeded to write a handful of screenplays for 20th Century Fox. This wasn't a happy period as only a few of these scripts came to fruitiion. Serling went to work for MGM as a writer for Playhouse 90 and garnered both critical and public acclaim for his one-off drama productions.

In 1957 Serling shocked many of his fans when he left to create a science-fiction series he called The Twilight Zone. Each episode transported the viewer to a world filled with magic, horror and wonder. The Twilight Zone gathered together talented actors, excellent directors, imaginative writers and coupled it with high quality production values. It's as how that continues to fire the imagination of viewers nearly forty years later.

The programme was hugely successful and during its five year run attracted an average weekly audience of close to eighteen million people. 156 episodes of Twilight Zone were aired on CBS over the next five years. Ninety two of which were written by Serling. The show went on to be one of the most famous series in television history and achieved a permanent place in popular culture with its instantly recognizable theme tune and distinctive opening sequence. The series was hosted by Serling himself and featured guest appearances by personalities such as Burt Reynolds, William Shatner and Robert Redford The show became a launching pad for some of Hollywood's biggest stars.

When production of Twilight Zone ended in January 1964, Serling continued to write for film and television series. In 1970 he returned to telefantasy with another anthology series Rod Serling's Night Gallery. The show ran for two lacklustre series but Serling refused to have anything to do with the production end of the programme. Time and again the producers sacrificed quality for shock value and the series was finally cancelled in 1972. Around this time He resumed his academic career and returned to Antioch College as a professor.

Serling suffered a mild heart attack and underwent emergency surgery in May 1975. A month later he was re-admitted for a coronary bypass operation. Complications arose after ten hours of surgery, and he died on June 28, 1975 in Rochester, New York. In all he had lived fifty years, six months and three days.

Ten years after it's creator's death The Twilight Zone returned for a further three series. These episodes were lavishly produced in colour and boasted state of the art special effects. They were immensely enjoyable but in my opinion they lacked the atmosphere and sheer inventiveness of the original series. Here is list of all the episodes including the original series and revived programme.
