Valentine Alexander WILSON *(18) (19)(20)

Valentine was born 29 March 1830 in Nelson, Niagara County, New York... He died on 23 September 1913 in Kuckville, Carlton Twp., Orleans County, New York and buried in the Carlton Cemetery... He attended local Wilson public schools and finished his education at the Wilson Collegiate Institute... At age 24, the 1855 NY Census for Carlton, shows him living with his granduncle, Mathias Brown, grandmother Catherine Farhnam, and brother Almeron and his family... In March 1862 , Valentine was listed as an heir-in-law in his grandfather's probate when Reuben Wilson died at Wilson... He and his brother Almeron were mentioned as being children of Reubens deceased son Alexander.

According to the "Record of the Town of Carlton, Officers, Soldiers and Seaman", prepared by the Carlton Town Clerk in 186(?), Valentine Alexander Wilson, enlisted on 11 August 1862 as a private in Company A of the 151st Regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry from Carlton... He enlisted for 3 years at Medina (some documents say Lockport), and was discharged, 26 June 1865, from "near Washington"... On 1 January 1864 he was promoted to corporal, then sergeant on 1 May 1865... From December 1863 thru June 1864 he was "on duty Company Cook", then thru March 1864 was "on duty Company Commisary"... His discharge papers indicates he was 32 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches tall, dark complexion, hazel eyes and dark hair... Also, that he was a Sergeant in Capt. Benjamine F. Miller's Company A, 151st Regiment of the Volunteer New York Infantry under the command of Col. William Emerson.... The "Chronicles of the 151st Regiment", by Helena Howell, shows he took part in the battles of Locust Grove and Manassas Gap, Wilderness 8 days battle, Spotsylvania, Hanovertown, Cold Harbor, Opequan, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek, and McLain's Ford... His uncle, Luron D. Wilson, was commanding officer of Company F of the same regiment.

In all New York Census from 1860 through 1875, Valentine is shown with wife Susan and children living in Carlton near the Lakeshore...In 1857 Valentine and his brother Almeron puchased portions of Lots 1 and 11 from their grandmother Catherine Farnum (Farnham); Valentines portion was sold to Almeron in 1869... In 1869 they purchased 80 acres of land from George and Julius Kuck (Lots 6 and 8 of Section 9, Twp. 16, Range 2)... The same year his wife Susan purchased other portions of Lot 8 from Minerva C. Dunham... In 1874 they began living on and farming this land... It was to become known as the Wilson Farm and the families of Valentine, Fred E. and Glen F. Wilson lived on it until sold in the 1930's... In the 1880 Census his 92 year old grandmother, Catherine Farnum, is shown living with him... Up until this time she had lived with his brother Almeron... In December 1894, Valentine and Almeron were named in a halfsister's will, Ruth Catherine (Kate) Lutts (Lockport Surrogate Court Records, Dec 1892, LDS-FHC MF# 0900556, V.2, pg 188).

OBITUARY DATA: Death date written on back of Valentine's Civil War discharge papers indicates he died 23 September 1913 (83 years, 5 months, 25 days)... An article in the Orleans Republican, Albion newspaper, dated 1 October 1913, under news of Kuckville, reads, "The funeral of Valentine Wilson, whose death was reported last week occured on Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev . R. E. Brettle officiating. Mr. Wilson has been a life-long resident of this place and will be greatly missed. He served his country three years during the Civil war, and had made all preperation to attend the Gettsburg reunion but sickness prevented his [attendance] and he has now joined the great reunion on the other side where he waits to greet the other comrades. A comrade cousin from the West who he was to meet at gettysburg, has visited him during his illness and was here to attend the funeral. Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife and three sons, Fred E. of this place, Henry V. of Wolcott, and Walter of Buffalo; and six grandchildren, besides one brother of Montrose, Mich., who is also a comrade. The burial was in the Carlton Cemetery"... In the same newspaper another paragraph reads, "Benjamine Wright and wife and sister of Lockport, were here to attend the funeral of Valentine Wilson."

Valentine married Susan Adelia PHELPS * on 12 January 1857 in Carlton... The 1869 Orleans County Directory (LDS Lib Call 974.791E5c), shows Valentine living on Lot 11 (S9-R2), Kuckville, as a Farmer.

Susan Adelia PHELPS *

Susan was born 27 September 1838 in Parma, Monroe County, New York... She died on 22 December 1922 in Kuckville, Carlton Twp., Orleans County, New York... She was buried in Carlton Cemetery... Orleans Co., NY.(21) Susan's younger sister, Lydia, married Valentine's older brother Almeron.

In 1858, Susan purchased parcel 12 of Lot 1, Section 9, from Catherine Farnum (Farhnam)... In 1869, she bought portions of Lot 8 from Minerva Dunham, then in 1880 more of Lot 8 from Charles Dunham... In 1892 she obtained more of Lot 8 from Julius Kuck and Calista Phelps... In 1904 and 1908 yet more of Lot 8 from William Kenyon... In 1900 she sold 2 parcels to Fred E. Wilson.

Nellie was born on 4 October 1857 and died 14 March 1881 in Carlton, Orleans County, New York. She was buried in Carlton Cemetery... Gravestone reads: "Nellie M., daughter of V.A. & S.A Wilson, died March 14, 1881, aged 23 years, 5 mo, 10 ds".

iii.. Henry Valentine WILSON

Henry was born 25 July 1866 in Carlton, Orleans County, New York>(22) and died about 1954 (assume Wolcott)... He first appears on the 1870 State Census living with family in Carlton (Kuckville) at age 4... 1900 Census for Orleans County, he and his wife, Irena HARD (b.1874, Murray, Orleans County), are shown living on Erie Street in Albion... In 1905, they are shown, with two daughters, living in Carlton (Kuckville), he as a farmer... In 1920, Census he is shown as a Produce Dealer, (52) and living at 21 New Hartford St., Wolcott, Wayne County, New York, with wife Irena S. (44), and daughters Margery E. (18) and Pauline A. (17).

Walter was born on 2 November 1876 in Carlton, Orleans County, New York. He died before 1920 in New York... He served in the military (branch unknown).
