It
discusses second language writing from a written discourse perspective
and analyses the lack of coherence and unity often seen in learner compositions.
To do so, a student composed text was chosen for analysis in order to
identify its problems in relation to discourse such as cohesion, clause
relations, textual patterns, genre, and reader expectations. The paper
also considers the pedagogical implications and provides suggestions on
the best ways to teach written discourse to the second language learner.
