NOTES:

5. Elisha Harrison, b.ca. 1780 at North Carolina (Nelson Co.?), d. 1848 (age at death: 68) at Estill County Kentucky

The following letter was supplied to me by David Travillion Bunton, 613 South Commerce Ave., Russellville, AR 72801. The letter dates from 1930/31:

Mrs. John L. Gay
25 Chesnut St.
Berea, KY

Dear Cousin Nora,

I was both suprised and delighted to get your letter but I am afraid, I can't give you any, very encouraging information, at to our revolutionary ancestors. Yes, my father [John Baker Harrison] and your grandpa were brothers, their father name was Elisha, they first settled as they called it in those days North Carolina, came from North Carolina to Tennessee from Tennessee to K[entuck]Y. Their granfather name was Jonathan Harrison their great grandfather was Elias, their father was buried in Jackson County, Kentucky, not far from McKee. I never heard father say anything about his people being in the revolution, but once and that was not very enlightening his first wives sons were everyone demarcates [democrats], and he was such a strong union man they were discussing the political question one day, and he (John Baker Harrison) said, my forefathers suffered and died for my freedom, and there is not one drop of rebel blood in my veins, but who those ancestors were we haven't been able to find out may have been on some of their grandmothers side, their grandmother Harrison was a Terry, I have heard father speak of a second cousin, Joseph Terry, he lived somewhere in Madison County, he named one of his sons for him, their grandmother Baker was a Terril, I don't know how the name was spelled, it may have been Phirril, I am sure it the D.A.R. question has come up while he was here he could have told who his forefathers were, but he has been dead almost 42 years. I am afraid I haven't told you anything that will be very much help to you, but I have told you all I know about it, and I hope you will have better luck than I had so far. Yes, I heard of Bells death. I thought of her so often, since I saw her two years ago, last June, and wished so many times that I could see her again. I will close wishing you all kinds of good luck in tracing your ancestors.
Your cousin

Rose Harrison Carpenter

Elisha and Igha settled at the Blanton Flats which was in Clay County in 1807, Estill County after 1808, and Jackson County after 1858.

Elisha's son Elisha, Jr., sold land to Berea College and served on its board of directors.  His daughter Elizabeth donated some of the family papers to the Museum at Berea for its Centennial.

The 1778 Wilkes County tax list includes the names, Capt. Andrew Baker (this would be the Rev. Andrew Baker), James Baker, John Baker, Morris Baker and Robert Baker. There also appears on the tax list: Thomas Calloway and Jeremiah Harrison. Another family associated with the Bakers of Clay County, Kentucky is the Hammons and Ambrose, John, John, Jr. and Robert also appear on the Wilkes County tax list.

Ipha Baker may have been a daughter of a Cherokee Native who's husband John Renta Baker killed and that he afterward married out of quilt for killing her husband (according to Harrison traditions).
