Parts of Speech

Sentences are made up of eight different kinds of words. These different types are called parts of speech.

noun Nouns are the names of persons, places, and things. They function as subjects of sentences, direct objects, predicate nouns, and objects of prepositions. (See more at Sentence Structure.and at nouns)

pronoun A pronoun is a word that substitutes for a noun. (See more at pronouns , pronoun agreement , pronoun reference , indefinite pronouns , and pronoun case)

verb A verb is the engine that powers the sentence. It shows action or state of being. (See more at verbs and at Sentence Structure.)

adjective Adjectives modify or describe nouns. (See more at modifiers.)

adverbs Adverbs modify or describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. (See more at modifiers.)

prepositions Prepositions introduce prepositional phrases. Prepositional phrases modify nouns and verbs. (See prepositions, Sentence Structure, and modifiers.)

conjunctions Words like "and," "but," and "so" are conjunctions. They join sentence parts together. (See more at conjunctions)

interjections Interjections show emotion. They are not structurally related to the rest of the sentence. (See more at interjections)
